Diversity: The school seems to be pretty diverse in most areas. However, they seem more concerned with offering aid to foreign students, first-generation students, or those of other races than to average, white students. I am a white female and have received Pell Grants every year and was just told that my parents make $100 too much for me to receive a Pell Grant this semester. My parents are supporting my sister and doing the best they can on their own; they do not help me pay for anything. I pay for my own rent, utilities, groceries, clothes, books, and anything else I need. However, I was told that there is nothing the school can do to help and I would have to take out a loan if I can not come up with the tuition myself.

I find that extremely unfair and can't help but wonder if I was a student of a different race if they would be more accommodating to my situation.

Campus Housing: Close to campus, however they're not the greatest-- especially communal bathrooms. However, you can make your dorms very homey.

Local Area: Not much to do unless you have a car. Gainesville is a typical college town ruled by college kids.

Party Scene: There's only four places you can really go Midtown, Downtown, Frat parties, or friends house parties. Not too many options. However, transportation is great.

Drug Safety: Tons of parties where alcohol is available. People don't make you drink, it's ultimately your choice.

Diversity: There are a lot of ethnically diverse people on campus and generally everybody finds their own niche, even though it may take a while. I've noticed that a lot of people stick with their ethnic groups.

Party Scene: If you're looking for the typical "college experience" as far as parties go, Gainesville has it. Frat parties nearly every night and the clubs are always full. Midtown is a little more subdued than downtown but it's still fun. The later gator buses run until 3am, I believe, which is great for getting home after a night out. Personally I'm more of a person that enjoys doing stuff like going to the movies, dinner, and just hanging out rather than going to frat parties, and unfortunately there isn't as much here to do on that spectrum of a night out.

Scholarships: I personally didn't qualify for any scholarships when I came to UF since most of them were financial need based. I do have loans and Bright Futures though and they are handled very well and I haven't had any problems with getting disbursement.

Weather: Being Florida, the weather tends to be kind of bipolar. It'll be 30 degrees out one day and 80 the next. It's not so bad most of the time but it does get rather hot and muggy in the summer, but that's what happens when your campus is in the swamp.

Drug Safety: its easy to get all this stuff mainly from older students or at parties

Scholarships: Financial aid only takes into consideration how much your parents make, regardless of whether they actually help you through college. I received no aid because my parent's "had the money." However, I am paying for my own education.

Off-Campus Housing: There are so many places to live off of campus. You can live close and in something not as nice, or a bit farther away and something really nice for about the same price.

Drug Safety: I've never had any encounters with drugs at school. If anything, drugs are done off campus.

Greek Life: They are very active, always doing events, but won't bother you too much if you aren't involved with greek life. Just stay clear of Frat Row and you'll be fine.

Some schools have certain advantages over others. Small schools give a feeling of community; large schools have lots of resources; private schools are ripe for close academic relationships with faculty; and state schools offer a good value. Well, UF is not your typical state school, and Gainesville is certainly not your stereotypical small town. Because this place is so big, it has all of the libraries, dorms, athletics, courses, clubs, and services you could want at a good price. But if you put forth just a little effort, you’ll find that the University also has more compassionate, down-to-earth professors, locals, and students that any small, private school could ever dream of having.

The best thing about going to a school like UF is that whatever you want to accomplish in life, it is probably obtainable through going to this school. You will never have to worry about not fitting in with anyone because the campus is a huge melting pot. Students are never bored on campus because there is literally always something to do with friends both on or off campus. And who wouldn't want to go to a school where the immense amount of school pride is literally unexplainable? It sure is great to be a Florida Gator.
