Off-Campus Housing: A Little Tricky – The off-campus housing can be a little tricky. The landlords are great and have been working with college students since they've probably started renting. However, Newark government does not want college students living in houses that actual residents of Newark could live in. Having said that, people who want to live with 4 or more people have to be careful because most houses are zoned for only 3 people to live in. however, the landlords have been fighting this and are always willing to let as many people that can fit in the house, live in the house. As for price, you just have to look around, there are plenty of houses and some of them are typical college houses.

Off-Campus Dining: Main Street Food – There is a lot of variety of food to choose from off campus. Many of the favorites are Sliders on Main Street, D.P. Dough, and No. 1 chinese food. The latter two deliver and are open late which is very convenient for students trying to study/cram for an exam. Also the actual restaurants on Main Street are very good. They are nicer-quality, sit-down restaurants, but still affordable.

Greek Life: Greek or go home – Only about 20% of the student population is involved with the Greek system but it feels like wayyyyy more people are. It's getting bigger and bigger at UD and you don't have to be a part of it, but it's not a bad idea to join

Parking: Its so hard finding convenient parking. You have to get there at least 30 min before your class to find anything remotely close to where classes are.

Academics: Pharmacy Major – Being a Pharmacy major at University of Delaware is very complicated and stressful sometimes. Pharmacy cant be declared as a major because its a program at UD. Students such as myself spend the first 3 years at UD and then go on to compete the rest of our studies at Thomas Jefferson University in Pennsylvania. Its frustrating sometimes because id like to stay in Delaware. The workload is very strenuous. I work hard to try and accomplish what I can to get good grades and try and balance school work, and my personal life and my job. I take about 15-16 credits per semester and im a sophomore. Starting next semester ill be taking 18 credits and summer and winter courses to be able to complete my degree as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Overall Experience: I love UD so much!!! Being part of honors makes it amazing because its a great balance between school work and also being able to go out when I want to. I think its an amazing place that really inspires students to take interest in many things and explore through hands on work.

Diversity: White White Middle Class White – Almost everyone at UD is white and for the most part middle class. Students are all generally very nice and friendly, but there is little to no diversity. For the most part people come from Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Long Island. Even though diversity is low, you'll meet all different types of personalities and there are very very few people stuck up or rude. Drinking is also big at UD and a lot of students like to party.

Health & Safety: Presence Should Be Seen More – Public safety is very quick to respond and very helpful when called which is great, but they're presence is almost never seen on or around campus. Some areas where dorms are or where students live are unsafe, especially when dark. The trail on West campus is widely called the rape trail because of how unlit and unguarded it is at night. Elkton road is also pretty unsafe and this past semester there have been several attacks on girls around these areas. I think campus safety and Newark police should be seen more, and not just on weekend nights where there is drinking.

Technology: You Should Bring Your Own – It's not hard to find computer labs on campus but they might be crowded during finals or taken by classes occasionally. Printing is good because every semester you're given $5 worth of printing which goes really far but I wish there were more places to print from, the only place i know of is the library. The network is reliable and pretty fast, only crashes during class registration when everyone uses it. Almost everywhere is wireless but some places like the turf field on East campus are not, and it would be nice if they were to do work outside on nice days. Its best to have your own laptop and use it in academic buildings or in the dorms for best service.

Majors: Getting into the education program was difficult, but it's because I started late. Getting into some other majors I know is very hard to do though.

3 College Sophomore

Transportation: Everywhere but Nowhere – There are so many buses on campus, which is great, but a lot of them aren't following the schedule, so you can never catch them when you want to.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: Rather Nice – For what you get, it's great. You can choose where you want to live and who you want to live with. The freshman dorms aren't terrible, but the upperclassman dorms are so much better

Weather: Delaware is a very bipolar place when it comes to weather. One day in the winter it will be 30 outside, and then next it can be 60. It doesn't rain TOO often, but it'll snow in the winter occasionally.

3 College Freshman

Campus Food: Some days are good. Others are terrible. It's usually somewhere in between. There are definitely a lot of options, though. Salad bars are good, and there are a lot of dining plans.

Health & Safety: Pretty Safe, but Be Careful – Generally, if you're on or near campus, you'll be fine. But crime does happen here sometimes, so travel in groups and have a cell phone. I've never felt unsafe in my dorms or on campus.

4 College Sophomore

Majors: A Major Benefit – Professors are top class a lot come from Ivy leagues and have decades of world experience. Some are difficult to understand (especially grad students and TA's) but most are genuienly concerned with their students welfare. Being in the business college has countless opportunities as far as internships, programs, and career help.

Scholarships: Don't Expect Much – Financial Aid is kinda of hard to come by at times. Although i did not qualify on a needs basis, i know many friends who complain about delays and whatnot. As far as scholarships, they offer many but they are relatively small compared to the cost, especially for out of state students.

Greek Life: Greeks Are Aren't the Bees Knees – Greek life is important to some and irrelevant to others. I think about 20% of the population is greek and i have several greek friends which is nice for social events. Some frats like Kappa Sig and KDR have a little more status but overall its not a big deal.

Transportation: Transportation at University of Delaware is great. There are shuttle buses every 10 minutes at all of the many bus stops, and if you want a ride late a night, there is a number you can call for a UD taxi. Taxi rides are free, but you have to wait a long time until they arrive.

Campus Housing: The dorms differ greatly at UD. Freshman year I was assigned the worse down on campus. We lost electricity, there was no space, and we did not have air conditioning. Despite the disadvantages, the social life of my dorm was greater than the more luxurious freshman dorm. So the experiences equaled out. Living on campus is very costly, but all of them are located close to campus. As a sophomore, I now chose to save money and rent an apartment off campus.

Campus Food: University of Delaware has a few different dining halls. Not all dining halls are the same. During my freshman year the closest dining hall was very small for the amount of students. In order to get great food, you had to come early and wait in very long lines. As the lines shortened, the delicious food ran out. You were always guaranteed cereal though (Lucky Charms: my fav!). Other dining halls were newer, more spacious, and always offered great food. Despite my experience with my freshman dining hall, UD offers "points" that can be used towards a food court on campus. The food court has a burger place, Quiznos, pizza, salad bar, sushi bar, and Chickfila Whenever I did not feel like using my dining plan, I would use points towards Quiznos.

Drug Safety: Drinking Is the Main Problem – I know there have been party busts, especially at the sports houses. However, people drinking have never caused any major problems or affected me in any way. Some people smoke and that is the main part of the drug scene that I know of.

Athletics: For a Division 1 School, the Sport Teams Aren't That Impressive – I didn't think that many students attended the games and they didn't even play exceedingly well when I went. The facilities are pretty good though. Those who do attend seem to have good school spirit.

4 College Freshman

Technology: Computers were almost always available when I needed one. There are friendly people to help you and the $5 printing allowance was enough for me. I love that there is wireless internet in the room and it is always available. This convenience causes me to use my own personal computer and printer in my room more often than the schools technology.

1 College Sophomore

Scholarships: Tution for out of state students is significantly greater than Delaware residents. It is very unfortunate because I am choosing a field based on my love for teaching, not the paycheck. That being said, I get minimal financial aid and it will take me a very long time to pay back my student loans. I wish there was more opportunities to receive financial aid or be guarenteed to be on a work study program

By the end of their years here, most students look back and are happy with their choice. They've received a good education and generally met some people with whom they will keep in touch for many years in "real" life. This love of the school comes about gradually for many students. While some students love it automatically and fit in easily with the relatively homogenous campus, others take longer to find their place and truly start to enjoy themselves.

While many students have a slow start here at Delaware, they all report that once they decided to give it a chance, they found their experience rewarding both academically and socially. This University tends to provide a nice balance between a social life and an academic one. There is always plenty of time to hang out and get your work done, so no matter what you are interested in, you have a chance to get it all done. This is the major benefit of attending the University of Delaware.
