2 College Freshman

Administration: There is too much focus on attendance as opposed to actual learning. The parking violations are excessive and unnecessary.

2 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: There are not many options for off campus housing, and in order to live off campus, students must make arrangements very far in advance. Parking is a big issue on and off campus.

3 College Freshman

Weather: The weather tends to be very average. There is a lot of rain, but the winters are not typically that bad.

2 College Freshman

Athletics: I do not think there is much school spirit when it comes to athletics. The attendance at football games is mediocre, and there is little funding for the club sports. The gyms are too small for the number of students.

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: The off campus dining options are very diverse and overall good quality.

2 College Freshman

Greek Life: Greek life is fairly dominant on campus. Although you will not be criticized for being non-greek, it is a big part of the social scene. It is very competitive to join, which makes it a stressful process.

3 College Freshman

Diversity: I would say the university makes an attempt to encourage diversity. The student population, however, is very homogenous and not very diverse.

Drug Safety: Most of the students drink and do so multiple times a week. It can be difficult to study in the dorms during these times. There are many emergency calls for students who have ended up with alcohol poisoning. If you do not drink, there is not much to do on the weekends.

Health & Safety: Safety isn't the greatest here. The student themselves don't seem to be involved in dangerous activities. I had my dorm unlocked all last year and never a thing was stolen. The concern is more robberies and assaults on campus. Non-students seem to rob students, especially grad students. At least once a month we are notified that there was an armed robbery or assault on some student by two non students. Just don't walk alone off the beaten trail and you should be fine. Although I walk alone often.

Off-Campus Dining: There are very many places to choose from. We have many mexican food place, diners, coffee shops, bagel shops, fancy restaurants, pizza places, Italian food, and much more.

3 College Sophomore

Technology: I don't have much to say here. Every student has a laptop. The only place to print is the library or your dorm. Bring your own printer.

4 College Sophomore

Scholarships: If you are a high need based student then you will have luck but if you are only merit based, you better apply for scholarships in highschool. I have a friend who was valedictorian in highschool and UD gave her nothing. I have several friends with a similar story.

4 College Sophomore

Greek Life: The only way you will know if somebody is in a sorority of frat is if you see them out in their greek letters or ask. Most of the people on campus come from a decent standard of living and most people are very sociable and friendly. They may come off as snobby but they are generally very nice.

Local Area: Main street is great, it has a lot of places to eat. The mall is very close and is very popular on the weekends. On nice days practically everyone is outside on the turf or on the green. There are a lot of runners. The football games are very popular. There is a lot of fun to be had.

3 College Sophomore

Academics: Depending on your major you can have a really tough workload. I have friends in engineering or biology or nursing that might have 5 tests in one week. I am in hotel and restaurant management and have a very easy workload.

Transportation: I really have only taken the bus around campus and it's free. Its pretty great for the towers because it will take you right to your classes.

3 College Sophomore

Administration: In the dorms the RA is the only person that checks up on you. In freshmen dorms all RAs are strict. Once you go to upperclassmen dorms they are more lenient and might not care what you do. As far as professors go, they pretty much all take attendance using iclickers.

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: You see alcohol everywhere on the weekends. It will seem like everyone drinks because those are the people that are loud on the weekends. If you don't want to drink or party, you will find plenty of other people who don't. Cops pass drunk people all the time. They don't care as long as you aren't partying with high-schoolers, or falling on the ground. RA's will write you up if they see alcohol. Very odd few will smoke weed in and around dorms.

Campus Housing: I think that all of the dorms are great. You shouldn't choose your dorm based off of how big it is or how new it is. That is how you end up with no friends. Choose a dorm like Rodney or Dickinson where you will know every person on your floor. In Rodney, it doesn't matter if you have a roommate or not because everyone leaves their doors open anyway. I loved living there. In George Reed it's hard to make friends, but its like a hotel.

Weather: Delaware is very humid. 80 degrees leaves your skin sticky in the summer. We have a wonderful fall and Summer. This winter has been terrible, although most winters it only snows a couple times. Winters are never usually bad.

3 College Freshman

Athletics: A lot of people enjoy going to the football games in the fall, and sometimes the basketball games, but not much else.

Transportation: The megabus to large cities is pretty nice and very affordable.

Weather: The fall and the spring are absolutely gorgeous and it's amazing to walk around campus. The winter, as in any place in the north, is quite rough, especially for students doing winter session.

3 College Freshman

Academics: I'm an International Relations major and it's truly hit or miss. I have had some wonderful professors and some who are pretty bad and are not knowledgable whatsoever. I have a decent amount of work but nothing that's completely unmanageable.

Diversity: I am bi-racial and while the campus has over 250 student organizations to choose from, the student body is still not very diverse. I became very aware of the way I looked in comparison to my peers because the student body is overwhelmingly white and I identify as mixed. There aren't many students like me. The student body didn't feel totally unified. It felt like the majority of white students were not concerned with and/or ignorant to the importance of diversity. Overall it was frustrating feeling like a minority all the time. On the other hand, there are great organizations on campus for students of color such as the Black Student Union, HOLA, Campus Alliance de La Raza, UD Kamaal, Cultural Programming Advisory Board, Indian Student Association, and Multicultural Greek Organizations. These organizations transformed my experience as an Undergrad at UD. I almost transferred out of UD before becoming involved with Campus Alliance de La Raza and HOLA. It is there where I met some of my best friends from college.

By the end of their years here, most students look back and are happy with their choice. They've received a good education and generally met some people with whom they will keep in touch for many years in "real" life. This love of the school comes about gradually for many students. While some students love it automatically and fit in easily with the relatively homogenous campus, others take longer to find their place and truly start to enjoy themselves.

While many students have a slow start here at Delaware, they all report that once they decided to give it a chance, they found their experience rewarding both academically and socially. This University tends to provide a nice balance between a social life and an academic one. There is always plenty of time to hang out and get your work done, so no matter what you are interested in, you have a chance to get it all done. This is the major benefit of attending the University of Delaware.
