Off-Campus Dining

4 College Junior

Off-Campus Dining: I like the food in Hyde Park and it's easy enough to access the city and surrounding neighborhoods if you're bored of it.

Off-Campus Dining: Expensive, but it's Chicago. You can find anything you want.

Off-Campus Dining: A good number of interesting ethnic options - Mediterranean, Thai, Indian, sushi, Mexican, Italian, to name a few. Harold's Chicken is dirt-cheap and tastes absolutely heavenly, but it's loaded with grease and salt. Walgreen's and CVS are both open 24/7 in the area and have some basic snacks. Hyde Park Produce is awesome for cheap fresh produce, but the rest of their stuff is rather overpriced. The only real grocery store in Hyde Park is Treasure Island, which is huge and has lots of options but is again overpriced and also fairly far from campus. I usually only go there for meat and specialty stuff and stick to Hyde Park Produce, CVS, and this little Middle Eastern grocery called Valley of Jordan for everything else.

There are a number of off-campus restaurants that are incredibly convenient for students. You only have to walk a couple of blocks from the main quad before you are in the Hyde Park restaurant Mecca. The main concentrations of places are on 53rd and 57th streets. A lot of restaurants around Hyde Park will also give students discounts. They deliver anywhere on campus and also cater student events. The best part about off-campus dining is the variety. No matter what your favorite kind of food is, there is a place for you. There is Ethiopian, Thai, Chinese, American, barbecue, Italian, sushi, Greek, and on and on. There are also multiple options for each group, so you won’t get stuck going to one restaurant for your entire four years.

The prices are also incredibly reasonable. Local restaurant owners understand that their main customers are students, so they price their food with that in mind. If you are trying to go to a nice place, there are also fancier sit-down restaurants; they run a little pricier, but they are great locations for a parents' visit or a date. And if you’re ever bored of Hyde Park, you have the entire city of Chicago as your restaurant playground. Head downtown and explore because Chicago boasts some of the best restaurants in the world.
