4 College Sophomore

Athletics: When you go to games you feel like one within our school. Everyone has so much school spirit, and it is expected to love, and go all out for our teams, whatever the sport may be.

3 College Sophomore

Athletics: My school is not very spirited when it comes to sports, besides soccer. Soccer games are seemingly a must-attend event, but other than that, varsity sports are not really a big deal.

3 College Sophomore

Athletics: Personally the Athletics on campus are widely supported, although varsity sports are the main focus on campus. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, because at our Varsity games every student is in full spirit chanting all together. Our varsity sports games then encourage students to start intramurals which friends support all together and students create their own teams.

5 College Sophomore

Athletics: They're the best ones in our college, and I love them so.

4 College Junior

Athletics: School spirit is high, especially given that we don't even have a football team. Facilities are well-kept and make for easy-access for athletes.

Although students pout at the absence of a football team, most UCSB varsity teams are frequently winners in their divisions. The big teams that the students seem to recognize are soccer and basketball, which host the largest crowds. The lack of a football team takes away from the much-deserved attention and spotlight from UCSB athletics. However, despite the oblivious students, club and varsity sports are highly competitive and constantly win titles.

Apart from the highly competitive varsity and club teams, most of the student population takes part in intramural sports. Students can sign up with a group of friends and play against other intramural teams. From indoor soccer to inner tube water polo, intramurals are a fun way to get active and meet new people. At the end of each quarter, the UCSB Recreational Sports program hosts intramural finals for various IM sports. While UCSB may lack the typical football atmosphere that often draws in people, students still find a way to channel school spirit across campus, and this can be seen when UCSB plays rivals like Cal Poly.

School Spirit
The lack of a football team carries over into UCSB's overall school spirit, in comparison to some other big, Division I universities. Campus groups, such as the "Gaucho Locos," attend sporting events and do their best to pump up the crowd with tortilla tossing and rowdy cheers.
