3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: I am aware that there is an escort service for students when travelling alone, however, I was not aware that we have campus safety.

Party Scene: Nightlife in UCSB is noticeable to those who actually participate in social events such as parties. The club scene is not so big in UCSB but parties made by sororities and fraternities are widely known by students.

4 College Freshman

Athletics: A great deal of students attend athletic events on campus but there is not so much noticeable excitement at the beginning of the school year.

4 College Freshman

Technology: The wireless access on campus is very accommodating. Students are able to have high speed internet in almost all of campus, especially in their dorms.

4 College Freshman

Parking: Its fairly easy to find a parking space on or off campus but the annual fee is definitely a con. With other expenses that college brings its difficult to have a car for most students.

4 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Living on campus is much more easier than living separately due to the fact that most amenities are already paid for and are ready to use. The fact that students living on campus all have the social restrictions to focus on studying makes it easier to maintain better academic success.

4 College Freshman

Campus Food: The food at UCSB is delicious and includes a wide variety of choices to accommodate students that are concerned with the environment as well as their diet. The only negative aspect of the campus dining halls is that there are not many late-night options for students who have to stay up studying for a long nights.

3 College Freshman

Administration: Administration is not so much as strict but rather concerned for the well-being of the students. The Resident Assistants encourage students to be safe during any type of activity and encourage students to seek help under any circumstance.

4 College Freshman

Transportation: Students have the opportunity to take the local transit to school but many times the buses can be full and this can lead to students being late to class. Having a car makes it easier for students to travel downtown with much more ease. However, the main form of transportation in UCSB is the bicycle due to the fact that it is fast, convenient, and good for the environment.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Housing outside of campus is mostly viewed as a financial benefit for students. When living outside of campus students have the freedom to have social gatherings with much ease and not be reprimanded for it. However, for some it can lead to poor success academically when the atmosphere is no longer focused on studying but rather socializing.

4 College Freshman

Academics: There are various resources that are available to students that can guide them through the process of finding a job or what career path to take.

Academics: I find that there is a balance between the workload and the lectures at the university. However, I do notice that the teacher assistants are not always well prepared to answer in-depth questions from students.

Guys & Girls: Students at UCSB include the average Caucasian male and female (tall and blonde). They look fit and dress casual.

3 College Freshman

Local Area: The university is located somewhat far away from actual tourist attractions such as downtown. On the other hand, the school is literally next to the beach which calls for a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere.

Transportation: The bus is free for students (technically, we pay it in our fees)

Scholarships: As long as I keep up with my status and see the financial aid office, there isn't much of a hassle.

3 College Sophomore

Parking: It's pretty expensive considering we barely need a car at UCSB.

Greek Life: Personally, I am a part of the Greek Life and I'm one of the people who was completely against Greek life at first. It was one of the best college decisions I have made so far. I am still good friends with people who aren't part of the Greek life and have even encouraged non-Greeks to find the right organization for them. It depends on what part of the Greek life you have joined. There are panhellenic fraternities and sororoties who spent over thousands of dollars just for the letters. They hire maids and a chef for their Greek house whereas my sorority is just a sorority house my sisters all choose to live in together.

Ask practically any UCSB student, and he or she can give you a long list of things they love about the University, along with a few things they wish they could change. For the most part, UCSB is a college student’s haven with great academics, world-renowned professors, not to mention the great weather and laid-back atmosphere, and lastly who can forget the social scene? Some students describe Santa Barbara as paradise, but for those who quickly get over it and need a getaway, LA is a short one-hour drive south, while San Francisco is only four hours north. There are hidden treasures in Santa Barbara that you can explore and take advantage of while living there.

Do not let the weather and social scene cloud your judgment and decisions—take a deeper look at the school and ask the students. Chances are, the parties are not at the top of their list. Most students fall in love with their internships, clubs and organizations, and research work that prepare them for the real world. The most successful students are those who find a balance between academics and social life. The temptation to blow off school is present wherever you go, so the students pay extra attention to the work they produce. Overall, UCSB is the type of school that produces people that employers are seeking. You will find your fellow peers to be sociable and well-rounded in and out of the workplace. So although you may not get to experience game days like you would at a football school, there is nothing better than being able to catch a quick "surf sesh" before and after your class.
