Health & Safety: There have been problems with health and safety like most college environments, and the school/organizations work very hard to prevent incidents and provide resources for support

Party Scene: There's a $10 round trip bus that takes you downtown every Thursday night to the bars. Cover charges rarely exceed $5. Not a ton of variety but it's a good alternative to IV house parties.

Party Scene: UCSB has a reputation for being a party school because thousands of students walk around a few blocks of one street each Friday and Saturday night. The number of parties on a given night actually isn't that high; it's that they're all so close to one another.

Pretty much everyone drinks Friday/Saturday night.

Parties are fun if you know the guests or if you're a freshman still in the stage of meeting new people. After that they get old fast.

Academics: If you don't for sure want to go into research, don't go to this school.

5 Recent Alumnus

Drug Safety: This is a school where many people have personal experience with substances and can guide those who choose to experiment with them. You can trust people here because they have personal experience rather than just saying "drugs are bad." If you try a drug here, chances are you can talk to people who have done it so you know what you're getting yourself into.

I've personally not done a lot of drugs, and nobody treats me differently because of it.

Overall Experience: The professors here are here to do research, not to teach, and it shows. They teach in lecture halls of up to 800 students in an inherently disengaging manner. Students end up cramming and regurgitating information for tests every few weeks.

My interest in mathematics was seriously curbed when I came to this school because I simply did not learn the way it was taught. I'm not alone in this viewpoint.

The classes are as difficult as the professor feels like making them, rather than as difficult as the subject inherently is.

I have not grown in any academic disciplines whatsoever since I have been at UCSB. In several disciplines, I have regressed considerably.

4 Recent Alumnus

Health & Safety: The only crime that really occurs in IV is bike theft, and you can avoid that by locking your bike. Alcohol poisoning is only a problem if you drink enough to give yourself alcohol poisoning.

The police, however, are an absolute disgrace. They are concerned exclusively with issuing citations to generate revenue for the city. They do absolutely nothing to ensure public safety. Avoid them.

2 Recent Alumnus

Campus Housing: They keep letting in more and more freshmen so rooms intended as already small doubles are now triples with 3 people sharing two closets. Alcohol and drug policies are overreaching and ruthlessly enforced. Even the farthest dorm is only a mile from campus; the others are within walking distance of class. Social atmosphere in the dorms was great. I'm still good friends with a lot of the people I met three years ago.

3 Recent Alumnus

Greek Life: Greek Life is only 8% of students here. The hierarchy is quite defined and the university has been cracking down and revoking charters like crazy. You don't need to be in Greek Life here but it definitely has its benefits if you choose to join.

Ask practically any UCSB student, and he or she can give you a long list of things they love about the University, along with a few things they wish they could change. For the most part, UCSB is a college student’s haven with great academics, world-renowned professors, not to mention the great weather and laid-back atmosphere, and lastly who can forget the social scene? Some students describe Santa Barbara as paradise, but for those who quickly get over it and need a getaway, LA is a short one-hour drive south, while San Francisco is only four hours north. There are hidden treasures in Santa Barbara that you can explore and take advantage of while living there.

Do not let the weather and social scene cloud your judgment and decisions—take a deeper look at the school and ask the students. Chances are, the parties are not at the top of their list. Most students fall in love with their internships, clubs and organizations, and research work that prepare them for the real world. The most successful students are those who find a balance between academics and social life. The temptation to blow off school is present wherever you go, so the students pay extra attention to the work they produce. Overall, UCSB is the type of school that produces people that employers are seeking. You will find your fellow peers to be sociable and well-rounded in and out of the workplace. So although you may not get to experience game days like you would at a football school, there is nothing better than being able to catch a quick "surf sesh" before and after your class.
