5 College Freshman

Local Area: Its right on the beach, so the area is awesome! Isla Vista is cute but small

3 College Freshman

Administration: They are trying to crack down a little bit in light of recent events. No visitors allowed

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: As with all big schools, incidents happen. I wouldn't say UCSB is any different

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: The rooms are very small, but for many dorms, you're right on the beach

4 College Freshman

Athletics: University of California, Santa Barbara has beautiful surrounding areas for working out and activities. Therefore, the on-campus facilities aren't needed as much

4 College Sophomore

Athletics: SICCER GAMES ARE SO FUN. Also, the student rec cen has a lot of great classes and facilities.

Diversity: Even as a caucasian I was shocked at how many white people there are here. Still, in my personal friend group alone there are three europeans, three hispanics, an armenian, a sri lankan, a chinese, and a japanese person. There's a lot of diversity around and cultural organizations make it easy to find.

Majors: As a leading research institution, UCSB is great for life science, chemistry, physics, and engineering majors. There's also great global studies, econ, history, english, etc. departments. Just don't be a math major.

Majors: In any STEM major, youre going to have to deal with A LOT of annoying and difficult weeder classes. Just power through and get to those cool upper div courses!!

Scholarships: I personally got no scholarships... then again I'm a white middle class female with no disabilities with a 4.1 coming from high school.... don't have much going for me.

Guys & Girls: Honestly, the girls are hotter than the guys.... I'm jealous. Everyone at SB has an amazing butt. I do not understand. Still, if your'e not the most gorgeous human being to walk the earth, you'll be fine. As a whole, santa barbara is hot, but there's a lot of aesthetic variety!!

Off-Campus Dining: Lots of variety... but also like 8 pizza places alone

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: To be honest, I don't know much about it. The frats are known for parties and the sororities are known for either specific interest groups or for being a group of girls who all just want matching shirts.

4 College Sophomore

Local Area: With the zoo and downtown just a bus ride away, you've got stuff to do if you're ever bored of Isla Vista life

4 College Sophomore

Party Scene: No matter what, you'll find something fun to do at night. Want to stay in and eat ice cream? Get plastered on a balcony on the ocean? Watch a movie cheap or free? Dance your heart out? Play a casual game of gauchoball (rage cage) with your friends? Take a moonlit walk on the beach? All of these things are popular and available activities.

Campus Housing: I lived in FT (Santa Catalina) and hated being so far. On campus housing had a great atmosphere though!!

5 College Sophomore

Campus Food: Everything is fresh and yummy! Dining plans are expensive, but after hearing horror stories from other schools, UCSB has awesome dining.

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: I personally feel safe walking home at 3am, even as a young woman. Everyone looks out for one another here. Of course, someone f***s things up once in a while.

3 College Freshman

Administration: The campus generally has very good security, but the rules are randomly enforced.

5 College Freshman

Academics: It is fantastic, it is the best, it is like finding your soul mate

2 College Freshman

Greek Life: It's popular but it is not mandatory to be a part of.

Health & Safety: There are many precautions that can be taken for individuals to avoid these situations.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Ask practically any UCSB student, and he or she can give you a long list of things they love about the University, along with a few things they wish they could change. For the most part, UCSB is a college student’s haven with great academics, world-renowned professors, not to mention the great weather and laid-back atmosphere, and lastly who can forget the social scene? Some students describe Santa Barbara as paradise, but for those who quickly get over it and need a getaway, LA is a short one-hour drive south, while San Francisco is only four hours north. There are hidden treasures in Santa Barbara that you can explore and take advantage of while living there.

Do not let the weather and social scene cloud your judgment and decisions—take a deeper look at the school and ask the students. Chances are, the parties are not at the top of their list. Most students fall in love with their internships, clubs and organizations, and research work that prepare them for the real world. The most successful students are those who find a balance between academics and social life. The temptation to blow off school is present wherever you go, so the students pay extra attention to the work they produce. Overall, UCSB is the type of school that produces people that employers are seeking. You will find your fellow peers to be sociable and well-rounded in and out of the workplace. So although you may not get to experience game days like you would at a football school, there is nothing better than being able to catch a quick "surf sesh" before and after your class.
