Campus Food: The dining commons have fantastic food. My favorite will always be DLG, but Ortega for breakfast and the sundae bar. Occasionally, it gets repetitive if you eat at the same one too often. I miss not doing dishes, because leaving a plate on a conveyer-belt was so awesome.

Administration: UCSB does its best to keep students safe and happy.

Athletics: Go Gauchos! Ole ole ole ole!

Guys & Girls: Everyone is here and everyone is accepted here. We like it that way. We are just happy people.

Local Area: We have our own beach. The campus is beautiful with lots of outdoor spaces. It is an overall friendly and safe campus.

Off-Campus Housing: Watch out for landlords and look for off-campus housing early. Isla vista is a wonderful community-oriented place to live, but it is not without its problems. Issues with Isla vista range from bike theft to high rent.

Overall Experience: This is the best school I could have imagined. I was able to hike in the mountains and lay on our own beach in the same day after class. The academics and the extracurricular options are excellent. The facilities are new and kept up well. This is not a school for the easily distracted, but if you can do things in moderation and keep balanced it can give you the best years of your life. There's a reason outgoing Gauchos still reminiscence about their days at UCSB.

Academics: UCSB has a wide variety of academic quality. I chose this school for the College of Creative Studies, which I can say was a great decision for pursuing physics. My instructor is just an instructor, he is completely devoted to teaching and guiding us at the beginning of our physics careers. Never have I not gotten a response to an email within 10 minutes. The sciences and engineering departments are quite stellar. However, the math department leaves much to desire, physics students don't get priority enrollment for required math classes, whereas economic students do?

I am also majoring in trumpet performance, and from my experience and many others, the music department is a mess. The faculty is in a civil war and not much is getting accomplished. They have great teachers individually, (Grant Hungerford is great), but politics simply get in the way. They are trying to become a chamber program, which in my opinion is only good for strings. Brass, woodwind, and percussionists don't have much option in chamber music (compared to strings), and at the university, the brass quintet, is now a brass quartet, since there is no tuba. Sure, there are also instrumental groups (flute, trumpet, clarinet, trombone ensembles), but with part time faculty, the brass groups struggle to find members. There is one trombone major (3 in the ensemble). There are 3 trumpet majors, only 5 allowed in the studio, and 4 in the ensemble. As far as trumpet ensemble music goes, you typically need at least 6 players to cover anything decent.

Off-Campus Dining: If there's something you want to eat, it's available in IV and within a 3-15 minute walk (depending on where you live). Plus, for finer dining, downtown Santa Barbara is only a free 20 minute bus ride away (bus stickers are available at the start of every quarter).

Overall Experience: Overall, UCSB is a fantastic place to go to college. Class sizes are a little large as a freshman, but as you go you'll experience smaller classes with professors who really want to get to know you.

3 College Sophomore

Majors: The pre-requisites for major classes, at least for the Econ major, are extremely difficult and mean to "weed out" students. Once you're in, though, you're fine.

4 College Sophomore

Majors: Workload is manageable and faculty are very friendly.

5 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: UCSB has one of the most beautiful student populations in the country.

Party Scene: There are parties every day of the week. The best parties are oceanside on DP (the odd-numbered houses), on the 65 or 66 block.

Greek Life: Greek life throws great parties, but friendships aren't based on what "house" you're in. Non-Greeks and Greeks are united.

Local Area: Isla Vista is, in my opinion, the best college town in the world. It's full of 18-24 year olds who are here to make friends, study hard, and have a great time. There's plenty to do in Isla Vista, but also in the Santa Barbara area. Many graduates find jobs in the area and move to downtown Santa Barbara after graduation.

Athletics: Athletics are well-supported, but most students would rather attend a party than a sports game.

4 College Sophomore

Majors: Mostly science or liberal arts, not much to offer with regards to business.

3 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: Although I don't feel safe walking alone at night, the fact that students and police are taking sexual assault on our campus seriously makes me feel better. Cameras have been installed around Isla Vista to prevent this.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: Since there are so many students who want to live in Isla Vista, landlords charge a lot and there's little we can do to stop them. However, living on the beach with your best friends for four years can't be beat.

Ask practically any UCSB student, and he or she can give you a long list of things they love about the University, along with a few things they wish they could change. For the most part, UCSB is a college student’s haven with great academics, world-renowned professors, not to mention the great weather and laid-back atmosphere, and lastly who can forget the social scene? Some students describe Santa Barbara as paradise, but for those who quickly get over it and need a getaway, LA is a short one-hour drive south, while San Francisco is only four hours north. There are hidden treasures in Santa Barbara that you can explore and take advantage of while living there.

Do not let the weather and social scene cloud your judgment and decisions—take a deeper look at the school and ask the students. Chances are, the parties are not at the top of their list. Most students fall in love with their internships, clubs and organizations, and research work that prepare them for the real world. The most successful students are those who find a balance between academics and social life. The temptation to blow off school is present wherever you go, so the students pay extra attention to the work they produce. Overall, UCSB is the type of school that produces people that employers are seeking. You will find your fellow peers to be sociable and well-rounded in and out of the workplace. So although you may not get to experience game days like you would at a football school, there is nothing better than being able to catch a quick "surf sesh" before and after your class.
