Varsity sports are what initially put UCLA on the map, and the fact that the school boasts more than 100 NCAA championships instills an insane amount of spirit in all Bruins right off the bat. Basketball usually lives up to the hype, as the team has the storied lore of Wooden to attain each year. Yet in the fall, the Rose Bowl is full of diehards in complete denial of UCLA's often meager football performance. Students attend the games to indulge in the frenzied action, and the ticket availability fluctuates with the success of the team. And while barrages of spirited students don't typically attend them, it surely shouldn't be forgotten that top-notch sporting events from rugby to gymnastics are hosted almost daily on campus.

Whether it is UCLA's varsity success, outdoor formatting, or sunny SoCal weather, exercise is a student priority, and the up-to-date Wooden Center is often more crowded than a frat party. IM sports have different tiers of competition, usually separated into three levels, but almost nobody competes in them besides Greek teams attempting to prove who's the coolest. The club sports scene, however, is well-respected and very competitive.

Most Popular Sports
UCLA truly is a two-sport school. During the fall quarter, students crowd Rose Bowl-bound buses for well-attended football games, though most of the fun is had at tailgate parties. In the winter, basketball dominates the sports scene, with Bruins commonly camping out for courtside seating.
Most Overlooked Teams
The softball team is constantly winning championships without many students taking notice. The same goes for men's track and field and men's and women's water polo-these teams are always competitive and rarely receive publicity. Rugby and gymnastics are rising in popularity among student spectators.
School Spirit
Students are proud to be accepted into UCLA, and their zest for the University's academic side seems to evolve into unadulterated school spirit during sports seasons. The dorms light up as the sports teams charge into the national spotlight, lines for buses to the Rose Bowl are miles long, and blue and gold apparel is literally everywhere. Although the basketball and football teams don't always win championships, students still gush about the lore UCLA carries. Most students engage in sporting events either by actually going to the games or watching with friends at Maloney's. If the big game against USC ever comes up, be ready for some real student spirit to spill. The Beat `SC Bonfire is an event with several thousand students that even captivates the local media.
Getting Tickets
A lottery ticket package system previously reigned, but the 2010-11 sports season will usher in the $99 Den Sports Pass. If purchased, the pass will grant students access to all UCLA sporting events-if they arrive early enough to beat their fellow Bruin fans in the seating war. And, while students were previously able to purchase sports tickets at a discounted rate, the new system will leave pass-less Bruins with no choice but to buy tickets at the public, albeit fairly reasonable, price.
Best Place to Take a Walk
North Campus's sculpture garden is serene, yet small. The seven-acre Botanical Gardens are always peaceful, and active students love to walk or jog "The Perimeter," an unofficial 3.8-mile course around campus.
Did You Know?
UCLA has won more NCAA championships than any other university in the country.
