4 College Sophomore

Administration: I've never had any problems with them

3 College Sophomore

Administration: Parking is ridiculous, citations are the biggest crime in Irvine. Otherwise, a very safe campus. Admin isn't that involved and doesn't actively try to limit students.

4 College Junior

Administration: normal conditions that are all acceptable.

3 College Junior

Administration: Administration is for the most part lenient in all terms except when it comes to protecting the students from protesters or negative attention.

3 College Freshman

Administration: Really strict about parking. Apparently it gives them billions of dollars that they don't really use for the students but for bonuses.

For a public university, UCI doesn’t seem to allow a lot of the personal liberties that even private colleges allow their students. RAs and some campus officers might be compared to a modern-day force of the Gestapo when it comes to drinking and drugs in the dorm areas. However, when it comes to protecting the students and their belongings, most agree that campus police (and maybe even the RAs) do a pretty good job. Drinking is heavily dealt with and is prohibited in the dorms, as are drugs. Some students have had experiences where they’ve gotten busted with little consequence, but when it comes to drinking and driving, campus police are absolutely intolerant. The actual town of Irvine seems to be walled off from the criminal element
of LA and is rather conservative, which might be an explanation for some of the strictness. It is obvious, though, that there is a lot of student animosity toward the campus authorities here. Having a police station on campus that is within minutes of housing probably doesn’t help matters either.

One of the unseen perks to having an active and abundant police force, however, is that their presence makes the campus that much more safe and secure. Not much is going to happen here beyond the occasional locker or bike theft or a student who’s not “smart” about drinking, but considering what else could be out there, an overly strict campus is probably a more than fair price to pay at UCI.
