Guys & Girls: There are a variety of people on campus that balances the overall diversity. Some people are exceptionally driven from their past academics, sports, music, or other achievements in their lives. Some people are here to fit into campus, as they felt like an outcast back in high school. And some people, are just here to have some fun. But whatever their main goal is, every person has some kind of belief in them that they live by, and creates a unique balance on campus. As a competitive karate athlete who devoted everything to academics and karate, I had a very narrow perspective when I first came to this school, because I felt that no one would understand my motivation, passion, pressure, stress, and the almost overwhelming joy that I feel from the sport. However, to be here at UC Berkeley, I learned that though it may be in many different shapes and/or forms of expression, that people all had an unique past will drive and passion to get here, and achieve amazing things in their lives now and in the future.

Berkeley has never really prided itself on its “hot” guys and girls, maybe for good reason. While some conventionally and exotically attractive guys and girls can be spotted on campus every day, most Berkeley students choose to focus on their activities, schoolwork, and friends, rather than their appearances or clothing. Many guys complain about the small proportion of physically attractive female students at Berkeley. For the most part, girls exert very little effort into their appearances, and it definitely shows. The girls, however, are not without their complaints about the guys at Berkeley. Many complain that the guys at Berkeley are either too shy or uninterested in the opposite sex to initiate a conversation that could lead to a possible date. Due to these factors, the dating scene is barely existent.

Although the opposite sex at Berkeley may not offer much from the dating perspective, both sexes speak highly of the opposite sex as friends, conversationalists, and activity partners. Many students have interesting opinions and beliefs and, for the most part, seem to be down-to-earth. The guys and girls at Berkeley appear to have their heads on their shoulders and respect each other for their intelligence, activity in the community, and high level of motivation.

Social Scene
While some students are definitely outgoing, the campus tends to be more relaxed. Strangers can have extended conversations with one another, and everyone has an opinion about everything. It is common to see groups of friends sitting on the grass, talking, sometimes with cigarettes or a guitar.
Hookups or Relationships?
Hookups are most prevalent, but casual relationships are not uncommon. Many students don't have time for a serious relationship and choose to date people who live outside of Berkeley.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
Students tend to think about school and work during the day, so it's not until going out with friends that they engage with new people. Most of the time, this is at the local bars, parties, or through other friends. Some students meet during class, but this rarely develops into anything more than flirting.
Dress Code
American Apparel and Urban Outfitters are the two popular stores near campus. Most people enjoy the indie look, with mismatched colors, flowing fabrics, and skinny jeans. Still, a lot also prefer T-shirts, jeans, and flip-flops, or work-out clothes. Most girls don't wear makeup, and many don't style-or brush-their hair.
