Majors: My first year here has been rather easy. Just concentrate on school work for a few hours a day and you'll be set.

Off-Campus Housing: Most Greek students live in their houses. If you dont live in a Greek house a car may be needed to get to and from campus because most houses are usually far away.

Administration: Easy to sneak alcohol into dorms although the RAs tell you it is prohibited they usually look the other way. You have to try and get a public intoxication to actually get one. If you are caught plagiarizing you will be in major trouble.

Diversity: Everyone usually hangs out with their own race and ethnic background. Most everyone is Republican but there are clubs for those who are Democrats. Most everyone is Christian or atheist. If you are a minority you might have to look a little harder to find people who accept you.

Campus Housing: Best housing out of any college i have ever been too. The newer buildings are pretty far away from classes but buses will get you there. Friedman hall (the best dorm on campus) is one minute from the strip and the quad, behind four frat houses, very loose on rules, and has a selection of suite style, traditional, and single styled rooms. Friedman is also co-ed. The newer buildings such as Presidential are getting a gym and dining hall next year which will be very convenient. the rooms in Ridgecrest, Lakeside, Riverside, and Presidential are all the same suite style but nowhere near classes, the strip, or Greek life.

Greek Life: This is the number one Greek scene in the country. You must go Greek if you are a guy. Girls are accepted into all the fraternity parties no matter what, but you will meet a lot less people if you dont rush. Greek students are harsh towards those who are not. The smallest Greek houses here hare bigger than the biggest Greek houses of other universities.

Parking: There is an abundant amount of parking near the dorms. Cars aren't necessary under any circumstance but are convenient. If you park without a pass on campus you will eventually get fined.

Local Area: Tuscaloosa is one of the top college towns in America. Everyone in and around Tuscaloosa is obsessed with the Crimson Tide. There are always different sporting events to go to excluding football Saturdays. There's a mall a mile off of campus. And there are always musicians playing at Fraternity houses.

Off-Campus Dining: Off-campus dining is very close to campus, there are a lot of different options to chose from such as Chipotle, Moes, Pita Pit, Firehouse Subs, Mellow Mushrooms, Buffalo Phill's, Cold Stone, Swen Asian Restaurant, Hungry Howies, Jimmy Johns ect.

Health & Safety: I walk along across the quad almost every weekend. There is the common fight and stealing of laundry but not very often.

Health & Safety: Campus isn't unsafe, there are some bad drivers, and lots of warnings about rape.

Diversity: Theres always a group for whichever type of diverse you are.

Drug Safety: There is a lot of peer pressure, the school does its best to make sure students are informed of the risks and consequences.

Scholarships: As an incoming freshman I was offered full tuition. However, I took one semester at a different college and the University went from saying I deserved a full tuition scholarship as an incoming freshman to saying I deserved nothing as a transfer student only 6 months later. They also refused to match the scholarship I was on at the other college.

Off-Campus Dining: Dining options can get repetitive. There are local non chain restaurants but they're all pretty expensive.

Scholarships: I am currently receiving a full National Achievement scholarship from the University. They are paying the sum or my tuition for up to five years and I also received a housing scholarship for my freshman year.

Campus Housing: I enjoy on campus housing. I live in the newer suite-style dorms and those are gorgeous and spacious. I have my own room and I only share a bathroom with one other person. Traditional style dorms tend to be older and I hear a lot of complaints about them.

Drug Safety: The administration, campus police, and student health services are pretty vigilant about warning students of the risks and consequences of drug use and underage drinking. However, it is still unbelievably easy for students to get their hands on any substances they want.

Greek Life: I'm not a member of Greek Life so I'm just speaking from the outside looking in. What I see in the Greek System is a lot of separation. There is very little racial integration in either the Caucasian greek organizations or the African American Greek organizations. And in both instances there is an extreme distinction between those who are Greek and those who are not. However, individual members of the sororities and fraternities are pretty genuine. I just wish the system weren't so elitist.

Athletics: I love everything about Alabama athletics. Of course everyone knows about the football team and they really are the best. Unfortunately I couldn't give athletics a "best" rating because the other teams tend to be grossly overshadowed by the football team. However, it is in the students' best interest to go out and show love for all the teams because overall, they're all pretty good in their respective sports. Personally, I love the basketball team.

Health & Safety: I generally feel pretty safe. I know how to get in touch with the police if I need them and they're never too far away. When it comes to health, I'm not quite sure. I've never been to the health center, however, I do feel that the location is a bit inconvenient from where I live on campus.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

University of Alabama students constantly brag about their school’s traditions and spirit, and their pride is shown throughout the town. Some say it’s the incredible education that drew them here, and others say it’s Bama football that brought them to this Southern school. But no matter what reason these students choose to come to UA, most believe it was the best choice they could have made.

After graduation, some students get a job, some further their education by going to UA’s grad school, and some even go to UA’s law school. No matter what the students decide to do with their future, they believe Bama has prepared them for it. Students advise upcoming freshmen to walk around the Quad, visit the Strip, or watch a football game to understand why so many love UA.
