Guys & Girls: The guys dress really weird. I thought they would be well dressed and preppy but they wear 90's jeans and ugly sneakers. Also, the "frat daddies" can be really pretentious. I don't see many guys on this campus who I could even consider dating. There are attractive people, but their personalities can be a quick turnoff.

Local Area: After you have gotten adjusted, there really isn't much to do here. There is a super Target off campus, as well as a walmart, Midtown village full of shops and restaurants, and a mall (but it kind of sucks). Most of the good shopping is in Birmingham, which is about a 45 min drive away.

Off-Campus Dining: There are a few places to eat close to campus that you can get to on foot, like the strip has Jimmy Johns, Chipotle, Pita Pit and Waffle House. There is more off campus though (you need a car) in midtown village. There are some student discounts, and most accept dining dollars.

Campus Housing: Some of the halls are really old, like Somerville, Tutweiler, Friedman, and a few others, so they are kind of crappy. However, if you are willing to pay or can afford it, there are an abundance of suite style dorms which are really nice. Presidential I and II are really nice (expensive though) but it gets tricky after freshman year to find housing. Many move off campus because it is cheaper, and also because you are not guaranteed housing after freshman year.

Athletics: For Football: if you don't like the sport, do not come here, because everything revolves around it here. 15 national championships, we are the best college football team in the country. Other sports are decent. The Golf teams, softball, and volleyball, are some other sports teams that do well. The softball team has won the world series multiple times.

Greek Life: The houses are like mansions, but sometimes it can be annoying when you are someone who is not greek. The fraternities are usually the only parties available which kind of sucks because they get old really fast. There is a constant war with Greeks and non-Greeks on campus. Also, its an expensive lifestyle. It can cost about $6,000 extra (on top of tuition) to be a member. Many of the Greeks come from families that are legacies to that chapter, or have rich parents to pay their student bills, with exceptions to some on scholarship, or others who have cheaper in state tuition.

Party Scene: Not really a party school. Being national champs and continuing to have a successful football team, I expected this campus to be wild! Now I see that unless you can get into bars (you have to be 19) or just want to go to fraternity parties all the time, you don't have many other options. There aren't many other parties other than the ones on fraternity row (which aren't even that great of parties...) and most of them are things like "swaps" where you can only go to if you are greek or in a participating house.

Health & Safety: After a scare about a gunman on campus about a little over a month into school, my perspective changed about how things were conducted among the administration. The students failed to get an email informing them what was happening. Also, parents were mislead by emails that were worded differently than what had happened (to calm many of them down) but I was disappointed in the lack of communication. Also, there has been multiple accounts where assaulted females were convinced to retract their statements by police so that way it technically "never happened."

Greek Life: The Non-Greek/Greek split is really prevalent and unfortunate, but the Greek system is active and strong.

Local Area: Tuscaloosa is what you make of it. It's no Sewanee, nor Philadelphia.

Health & Safety: One of the issues of going to a conservative school is that many people ignore the prevalence of rape/sexual assault, treat it as a joke, 'crucify' the victim, etc. Although the school's official policy is fantastic, it never follows through. Already, at least three girls have reported some form of assault, and the UAPD has pressured them to retract their report.

Party Scene: It's an incredible party scene - you aren't left out if you don't want to go out, but if you do want to go out, you have incredible options. However, if you're a guy, it's almost impossible to get into frat parties if you aren't a member. Also, I'm able to host 'dorm parties' on the regular in my suite, with ten-twenty people, and no one has ever complained.

Athletics: It's the Alabama Crimson Tide. What more can I say? Coming in as a northerner who was used to Phillies Baseball and Giants Football, this is a whole other world. And I love it.

Off-Campus Dining: Fast food mostly but most take dining card

4 College Freshman

Athletics: Easy to get student tix and participation encouraged

Off-Campus Housing: It's very affordable with a shuttle to class

Diversity: Although campus has people of all ethnicities, religions, and sexual orientations, minorities in these and other categories are forced to flock together because of the group culture on campus, making it difficult to find people who may be minorities in similar ways as you if you are not aligned with a group.

Administration: The faculty and the student body abhor the administration. We even have a fake Twitter account for the President mocking her failure as a leader. Although the failures of the administration don't truly hinder students' academic/social lives, they are making decisions that are truly terrible for the school. The administration's decision to continuously expand the student body, for example, has lead to an extremely overcrowded campus and not enough room for all freshmen to live in dorms. Furthermore, the administration bows to the Greek system, leading to failure to build new traditional dorms and accommodate non-Greek students. They also allow the Greeks to get away with everything from underage drinking to rampant racism with no real consequences.

Local Area: Tuscaloosa is a beautiful city and the archetypal college town. Downtown is awesome and hosts many cultural and performance events that are very accessible to students. Locals interact well with students because they have no choice, so they are not an issue. The only complaint I have about the town is that most things are expensive and if you are underage, most bars are closed to you.

Health & Safety: While I feel very safe on campus, even at night, the administration does an abysmal job at preventing sexual assault in particular and at communicating with students about possibly dangerous situations. The UAPD are very good, however, and things are very safe away from the drinking scene and Greek rows.

Health & Safety: I feel very safe on campus.

Scholarships: Financial Aid was easy and I also received a scholarship. I have not had any issues with the school receiving my payments and putting them towards my account.

Off-Campus Dining: We have the best dining facilities in the nation. Great cost and variety.

Campus Housing: We have the best dorms in the nation. Brand new, cost is great and the overall look is excellent.

Administration: I enjoy the school being so strict because I feel really safe.

University of Alabama students constantly brag about their school’s traditions and spirit, and their pride is shown throughout the town. Some say it’s the incredible education that drew them here, and others say it’s Bama football that brought them to this Southern school. But no matter what reason these students choose to come to UA, most believe it was the best choice they could have made.

After graduation, some students get a job, some further their education by going to UA’s grad school, and some even go to UA’s law school. No matter what the students decide to do with their future, they believe Bama has prepared them for it. Students advise upcoming freshmen to walk around the Quad, visit the Strip, or watch a football game to understand why so many love UA.
