Off-Campus Housing: Easy to find and generally cheaper than dorms.

Majors: I did not encounter any issues getting in the Communications School at the University of Alabama. It is not like some of the other schools on campus such as the Nursing School where you can be accepted or declined. Everyone is accepted into the Communications School.

Majors: It is wonderful to be in the Communications School at the University of Alabama! I would not want to be any other major. The professors are very helpful, students love their major and the advisors are very nice.

Campus Quality: The Ferguson Center is one of the most happening places on campus for student life and studying. There is a Starbucks, Chick-Fil-A and Burger King which makes it convenient to study there all day and still eat. There is always some type of campus activity going on whether it be a concert, play or social there is always something to do.

Guys & Girls: I would say the looks, interests, dress and social life of guys and girls at the University of Alabama is normal. You are likely to find one of every stereotype. From the geek, to the preppy kid, to the crazy alcoholic... you will see them all. I have made friends from all different walks of life and they are wonderful! You just have to get out there and meet people.

Academics: I am currently a Telecommunications and Film major and I love it! The professors are extraordinary and go out of their way to help you. The workload is average. It is challenging but not too much! Reese Phifer, the communications building, is beautiful. Also the advisors work hard to help you find internships and jobs!

Academics: The University of Alabama is a wonderful school filled with great professors. Every year that I have been at Alabama, each of my professors are willing to help their students succeed. Some are better than others, of course, but overall you are in good hands. The registration process is average and can be frustrating at times due to the amount of interest in some of the classes. Workload is normal! One great study place is Bruno Library!

Local Area: Where do I begin? Tuscaloosa is an upbeat and fun college town. It is filled with many chain restaurants, hole-in-the-wall places and even exclusive to Tuscaloosa diners. You certainly will not be disappointed in the food selection. There is plenty of activities as well. You can tour Bryant Denny Stadium, walk the beautiful campus or shop the local boutiques. During football season, the town is electric. The safety is exceptional and the locals are very accepting of students in their hometown.

Administration: There are some things that the University of Alabama is more strict on than others. For example, UA takes parking very seriously. If you park in the wrong zone, you can easily expect a ticket and after three tickets in one semester they will begin to boot your car at your expense. The administration has a zero tolerance policy for cheating and goes to every length to enforce it. The campus police do their best to crack down on underage drinking and use of drugs but since the campus is so large it still happens.

Off-Campus Housing: The off-campus housing selection at the University of Alabama is very reasonable. Although you must start apartment/house hunting very early to get a good spot, it is worth it. The prices vary but overall are average. The convenience is wonderful and there is a good variety of places to choose from based on what you are looking for. Parking at most places are average, safety is exceptional and overall each complex has a nice community feel.

Athletics: As many might assume, the athletics at the University of Alabama are some of the best in the country. Fan support and school spirit is very strong. The athletic facilities are considered top of the line and filled with the best equipment and amenities. Game days for football, baseball and basketball are all exciting and filled with tons of fun at the Capstone.

Guys & Girls: Average student body. Perhaps a bit too much into greek life.

Diversity: UA is not that diverse and the acceptance of differences (be that sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, religion, race) is not anywhere it needs to be on this campus. Students who are considered outside the "norm" are not treated equally by fellow students and in some departments, but certainly not all. If you're a queer student, practice a religion other than Christianity, or are not Greek, UA can be a challenge. HOWEVER, there are several progressive groups and people on campus committed to bringing about a positive social change on campus. So, it's getting better, but way to slowly.

Academics: I'm a New College student, and the program is amazing. The individualized attention I receive in class and from my advisor has really made the difference for me. New College is like a tight-knit community inside the campus. Everyone is helpful and supportive. Best program and people on campus.

Academics: Alabama may have flaws, but the academics here are excellent. As long as you are committed to your education, you will excel here at UA

Scholarships: My experience with financial aid has always been positive. From time to time I would call and get some less than helpful advice from an operator, but overall they were great.

Majors: UA offers a variety of programs and if you can't find what you want, there is the interdisciplinary degree through New College. New College is absolutely amazing. The advisors, faculty, staff, and profs are extremely helpful and actually interested in your success-- a lot different than the rotation of advisors who are almost impossible to track down when you get outside of New College.

Majors: I had a very productive internship with Student Affairs. I was not paid and it was a combination of research and service work. The staff was friendly, helpful and I learned a great deal from my experience.

Recent Alumnus

Athletics: If you love football, well this is the place for you. This campus lives for their football team. It can get pretty obnoxious. The head coach, Nick Saban, is a demi-god and it's a bit unnerving to see the rabidness of fans. With that being said, school pride is off-the-charts here.

Local Area: Tuscaloosa is a small town and wouldn't be what it is without the UA. The shopping isn't that great. Midtown is a shopping center with a lot of national retailers, but nothing spectacular. Transportation services outside of UA are not that great-- there is no option of public transportation from neighboring cities. And Tuscaloosa IS NOT BIKE FRIENDLY.

4 Recent Alumnus

Off-Campus Housing: Tuscaloosa is always adding spaces for student living. Pretty much all provide transportation or are close to bus stops. The university does assist students in finding the best possible living arrangements, either on campus or off.

4 Recent Alumnus

Campus Quality: UA is a beautiful campus which is constantly being added to or updated.

3 Recent Alumnus

Off-Campus Dining: There are several dining options close to campus. I think these places know their crowd and price food accordingly.

Overall Experience: I have been fortunate enough to take classes with excellent professors. It seems that the tenured or tenure track faculty perform their duties like "real" college professors. Temporary staff and adjuncts don't seem to have the same luxury of smaller classes and job security to teach as effectively.

4 Recent Alumnus

Overall Experience: I do believe that the reputation of UA is a positive when seeking a career after graduation. Most of my recent graduate friends have been able to find jobs. Also, the career services department has some really excellent staff to help students.

University of Alabama students constantly brag about their school’s traditions and spirit, and their pride is shown throughout the town. Some say it’s the incredible education that drew them here, and others say it’s Bama football that brought them to this Southern school. But no matter what reason these students choose to come to UA, most believe it was the best choice they could have made.

After graduation, some students get a job, some further their education by going to UA’s grad school, and some even go to UA’s law school. No matter what the students decide to do with their future, they believe Bama has prepared them for it. Students advise upcoming freshmen to walk around the Quad, visit the Strip, or watch a football game to understand why so many love UA.
