Tennessee State University's favorite sports are football and basketball. Student participation is pretty high in football and basketball for the guys and volleyball and basketball for the girls. Football games are by far the most popular, and basketball is a close second in participation and attendance. Right before a major football game, such as the John A. Merritt Classic, the Campus Center is covered in royal blue and white balloons and streamers. Around the area, especially by the interstates, there are banners advertising local parties and clubs after the games. Tickets are free for students, except the John A. Merritt Classic, and they are around $20 for guests. The Tennessee State University Tigers (football) play at the LP Field where the Tennessee Titans play their home games. TSU teams are rivals of MTSU (Middle Tennessee State) because the school is in Murfreesboro, TN, and there is always a lot of competition between the schools in any sport. The intramural sports most participated in are basketball for guys and volleyball for girls. The IM sports are played for bragging rights, and everyone who participates in them gets pumped up about them. Students will not have a difficult time fitting in regardless of whether they like sports or not, though. There are many students who do not play or attend any of the sports; however, a student cannot help but keep up-to-date, because students talk about the previous games frequently. Basically, if you do not like sports, try and keep an open mind because you will hear a lot of information about them.
