Local Area: Philadelphia is a great city to live in if it is your first time living in a large city on your own (without parent's I mean). I had considered applying to Manhattan School of Music and am thankful I didn't. I'm sure I would have been able to figure out the ways of NYC but Philly seems like a big city with training wheels. There are plenty of restaurants, parks, clubs/bars, and concerts going on ALL the time for everyone to participate in.

Administration: I don't think the dorm policies are any more strict than those of any other university. At Saint Joe's for example, you can't sign someone in of the opposite sex past 12am. That is far more strict than Temple. Generally the police are more concerned with actual crime in the neighborhood than just breaking up parties.

Off-Campus Dining: There are obviously many options for dining in the city of Philadelphia. Literally any cost or variety of food you are looking for can be found in the city by hoping on the subway.

Athletics: If the football or basketball team are doing well, EVERYONE is all of a sudden interested. It is unique to have the football games at Lincoln Financial field but kind of a hassle to get down there. I generally enjoy the basketball games better.

Majors: I have not had an internship because my major does not exactly call for the traditional internship. However, friends of mine in the business field have said it is competitive to find a good internship but not impossible.

Majors: I am very happy to have gone to Temple. I was lucky to have the conservatory-type atmosphere within the Esther Boyer Music School, but also the experience of a bigger university. Also living in a major city forces you to grow up and become very independent. I hope to go to a more prestigious school or conservatory for graduate school for Opera Performance. The cost of graduate programs are quite a pretty penny so I am taking a year or two off to save and be out of the confines of school before auditioning.

Greek Life: It's not as a big a part of Temple's social scene as it is for most other colleges in the country because students realize there is a whole city to explore and spend time in, instead of in some worn down frat house.

Party Scene: Even if you are underage in Philly, there are plenty of clubs that will have an 18 to enter policy. House parties are fun until around Junior year when you realize you want to spend your weekend time downtown or in other parts of the city (northern liberty, south philly, old city).

Drug Safety: Drugs and alcohol are on any college campus, but there is a slight increase because we are in a major city were these things are more readily available. Temple students aren't the most respectful to the neighborhood when they are drinking. Police will break up parties but are generally not looking to right up fines because the have larger things to worry about in North Philly.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Overall, Temple has its ups and downs, but students seem to love it all the same. On the downside, there can be some head-butts with tyrannical teachers, unfriendly cafeteria workers, and the always-frustrating financial aid office. Housing can cause an enormous hassle, and those commuting have to battle with parking or public transportation. Some people don’t feel as though they are prepared for the real world once they leave campus, but others say it’s been an incredible learning experience. Those students that love their experience at Temple all have their own reasons. Some love the atmosphere and found it to be a lot of fun. Others found it to be a great place to grow up and discover themselves. Lots of students take away more from living in a big city than they do from the University. But one thing it seems most students agree on is that the people at Temple University are what really make it a worthwhile experience.

In general, students coming to Temple have big expectations, from both the school and the city. Those that graduate either feel that Temple met their expectations, or if it didn’t, then it was their own fault for not pursuing more opportunities while they were there. Most students feel that Temple provides them with the opportunities that make their college experiences excellent—as long as they are willing to make use of them.
