Campus Housing: Personally, the worst of the items listed here is the housing process. I had a difficult time finding somewhere to live my freshman and sophomore years, but I am sure not everyone has had the same problems as I. The dorm furniture was new, but the buildings are older. The cost of things in Philadelphia are more expensive in general, not just around Temple.

Local Area: Historic landmarks are not hard to find in Philadelphia, and wherever you go, you will definitely see someone supporting one of the home sports teams. Safety: again, be careful when you are alone. Attitude toward students: varies from person to person, but the majority seems to think Temple students are taking over the area (which just so happens to be true).

Scholarships: I have not received much in financial aid, but I would say being proactive on my part in obtaining that financial aid would have been helpful.

Drug Safety: From my understanding, there are not many people that are bashful about the drugs they are consuming. Although I have personally not given into the peer pressure that is obvious in many cases, I have seen it happen.

Health & Safety: Temple has their own police department and they are everywhere. On campus, safety is not an issue, but do not leave your things unsupervised in public areas, they will go missing. There is too much foot traffic to catch all the thefts on campus.

3 College Senior

Party Scene: Temple is generally a safe place to be, but be careful off campus. Temple has their own police department that patrols campus well, but their limits only extend a few blocks from campus in any direction. I would not go too far off campus alone, to say the least. Transportation in Philadelphia is very convenient, which makes traveling into the city for a bar not difficult at all. The underage nightlife is the same, easy to get to, but don't go alone.

3 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Most guys are looking for quick hookups, not dedicated relationships, which is my turnoff.

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: The school has a very high party scene, so students who don't take part often feel left out. There is a high visibility of drugs and alcohol within the student body.

4 College Sophomore

Parking: There isn't need for a car on campus. Because it is a school in the city, parking is limited so it's understandable that the price of having an on campus parking spot may be higher than other schools. At the same time, the parking lots are monitored and throughout the campus.

5 College Sophomore

Diversity: Temple is a school full of diversity in every regard, and the student body is very tolerant and accepting of each other.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Quality: There are many clubs and organizations on campus, but with the large school size, it's hard to make a lot of close relationships with regular students.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Quality: I really love the Media Studies and Production program. There are many professional, qualified professors that are passionate about the subject. The student body is generally nice and dedicated, and full of school spirit. There's just many connections to be made through the school and the city.

3 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: I really love my school, but sometimes I feel as if the large size lets some people and problems fall through the cracks. I wish there was more personalized attention available. I love my program and the professors, and attending school in a big city that allows connections to major media markets available. Also, during these first two years, I've mainly only been taking my General Education classes which aren't the most fun. I'm hoping once I get more involved in my major, I'll be more excited.

Health & Safety: Campus is guarded off pretty well, but off campus is still dangerous.

Greek Life: Greek life isn't too big of a thing at Temple.

Transportation: I have never used the on campus transportation

Diversity: It's not as diverse as it feels, sometimes. I had a teacher tell my class one time that only 15% of Temple's population is African American, which came as a shock to most. In any given moment, you'll probably feel like you're immersed in a diverse community, and you are to an extent, just probably less so than you would think.

Drug Safety: Many people drink/smoke, especially on weekends, and sneak alcohol into the dorms to party. However, the security workers sometimes do random bag checks, especially on/around weekends, at random times - so if you're going to do it, don't get caught!

4 College Sophomore

Athletics: People at Temple have a lot of school spirit and take pride in our athletic teams. We play football at Lincoln Financial Field, otherwise known at the Philadelphia Eagles' Stadium, so that's pretty cool, but kind of a pain to get to - it's impossible to get on a shuttle and the subway is so crowded on game days and kind of a long ride. Most teams are subpar for Division I, though.

4 College Sophomore

Majors: I'm very happy with the Advertising program at Temple. I think they make it easy to obtain the knowledge and in-field experience you need to get a job post-graduation.

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: Go into the office - they rarely return phone calls/emails, and if they do, they're not helpful.

2 College Sophomore

Parking: Finding parking on the street is nearly impossible; you could drive around campus for a half hour and still not find a spot. Campus lots/garage are expensive to use.

3 College Sophomore

Transportation: The subway and train rates went up this year, which I'm pretty pissed about considering they were already expensive in the first place for college students. However, the train and subway are both fairly close to campus; they're easy to get to provided there is decent weather, and they'll take you right into the city.

3 College Sophomore

Party Scene: I think people kind of overhype the parties here. There are decent house parties, but they're pretty much all the same. And frat parties are 99% of the time waaaay too crowded to enjoy yourself.

3 College Sophomore

Weather: Living off campus, it sucks walking to class in basically all types of weather except 65 degrees and sunny. It's either too hot, too cold, too windy, too rainy, too name it, we've had that type of weather at some point or another.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Overall, Temple has its ups and downs, but students seem to love it all the same. On the downside, there can be some head-butts with tyrannical teachers, unfriendly cafeteria workers, and the always-frustrating financial aid office. Housing can cause an enormous hassle, and those commuting have to battle with parking or public transportation. Some people don’t feel as though they are prepared for the real world once they leave campus, but others say it’s been an incredible learning experience. Those students that love their experience at Temple all have their own reasons. Some love the atmosphere and found it to be a lot of fun. Others found it to be a great place to grow up and discover themselves. Lots of students take away more from living in a big city than they do from the University. But one thing it seems most students agree on is that the people at Temple University are what really make it a worthwhile experience.

In general, students coming to Temple have big expectations, from both the school and the city. Those that graduate either feel that Temple met their expectations, or if it didn’t, then it was their own fault for not pursuing more opportunities while they were there. Most students feel that Temple provides them with the opportunities that make their college experiences excellent—as long as they are willing to make use of them.
