Campus Housing: Housing varies considerably based on which location, and how much you pay. Morgan Hall - at $10,640 - is by far the nicest housing, with a kitchen and common area, and that's the newest, while we also have some run-down dorms that aren't so great too.

Athletics: School spirit is huge here! We turn out for football games in a big way, and we have decent participation for basketball as well. We play football at the Eagles' stadium, and TU buses us down to the games. Our team was phenomenal this year, and that's boosted the participation at all events.

Greek Life: You can find Greek life and get involved if you want, but it's nice that there's no pressure to and that it doesn't dominate the social scene by any measure. They throw most big parties, but our participation is about 4%, so chances are you won't run into too many frat/srat members outside of parties.

Health & Safety: Being in North Philly means there will be a decent amount of crime, but as long as you're smart about it and don't go to bad areas alone, you'll be fine. On a side note, my bike was stolen from a secure bike room - the police are good, but not totally proactive.

Drug Safety: There's a large contingent of the student body that drink, and many drink to excess as well. That's not to say that you can't find the non-drinking group, but alcohol and weed are very visible at this school.

Overall Experience: Like any school, there are going to be positives and negatives in terms of academics. But there are very few classes that have been challenging so far, and many people care more about getting hammered on the weekends than pulling a decent GPA. There's certainly a niche that really prioritizes academics, but even if you're dedicated, chances are you'll end up in a huge lecture where you're nameless during your freshman year. There can be very little individual attention when you start here.

Overall Experience: At least for the school of business, career prospects are great if you utilize the career services - they are extremely helpful and you will have every opportunity to land that perfect job.

Campus Housing: It's amazing. Everything is clean and up to code. Housing in my opinion is way too overpriced.

Health & Safety: Bike cops and TU police constantly roam campus, making it an extremely safe place to be. That being said, I haven't had a problem with the police invading my personal space or even bothering me; it really seems clear that they are there solely to keep out criminals.

Campus Housing: I live in Whitehall, and I don't really have any complaints. It's a very social dorm, and while people may say that it is far away from campus, I personally believe that's just an over-exaggeration. The rooms are adequately sized, and the study lounges are great places to get work done or socialize. My only complaint is that we have just one ping pong table-- I wish there were two! The most social dorm is J&H, but they are communal style which I don't really like. Morgan is nice, but from what I hear it is very secluded and not social at all. Avoid Peabody; the rest of the dorms (1300, whitehall, and 1940) are all excellent options.

Greek Life: As per Temple's new rule, Freshman are not allowed to pledge Greek in the fall, so I have no experience in that respect. However, Greek life seems like a fun way to interact with/give back to the North Philadelphia community, and all the people I've met that are a part of fraternities have been really chill. Plus, they often throw awesome parties pretty much every weekend, which is a huge plus.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Overall, Temple has its ups and downs, but students seem to love it all the same. On the downside, there can be some head-butts with tyrannical teachers, unfriendly cafeteria workers, and the always-frustrating financial aid office. Housing can cause an enormous hassle, and those commuting have to battle with parking or public transportation. Some people don’t feel as though they are prepared for the real world once they leave campus, but others say it’s been an incredible learning experience. Those students that love their experience at Temple all have their own reasons. Some love the atmosphere and found it to be a lot of fun. Others found it to be a great place to grow up and discover themselves. Lots of students take away more from living in a big city than they do from the University. But one thing it seems most students agree on is that the people at Temple University are what really make it a worthwhile experience.

In general, students coming to Temple have big expectations, from both the school and the city. Those that graduate either feel that Temple met their expectations, or if it didn’t, then it was their own fault for not pursuing more opportunities while they were there. Most students feel that Temple provides them with the opportunities that make their college experiences excellent—as long as they are willing to make use of them.
