Campus Housing: Choose to live in FloMo! It has the best dining on campus and has spacious rooms and closets. I love it!

Greek Life: I personally don't know much about Greek life on campus, but what I do know is that a majority of the sororities here are un-housed and that the housing of one particularly offensive fraternity, SAE (Sigma Alpha Epsilon, better known as Sexual Assault Expected), was indefinitely suspended.

Athletics: Though I personally don't pay much attention to them, the varsity teams here at Stanford are truly impressive. The Stanford vs. Cal game is by far the most popular football game for students to attend; however, unless you are an ardent football fan, I would say that attending one game your entire Stanford career can suffice.

Overall Experience: I don't think that I would love Stanford as much as I do if I were not enrolled in SLE, a program which purports itself as providing students a "liberal arts environment" within the university. SLE students, though they are a bit isolated from non-SLE freshman students, very much live in a tight-knit, intellectual community. I wouldn't trade my experience in SLE for anything else.

Drug Safety: Hard drugs don't have much of a place in mainstream culture here, which IMO is a good thing.

Our alcohol policy is extremely flawed in that it promotes "pregaming" parties, which involves rapid consumption of large quantities of alcohol before going out to a party that does not provide any alcohol itself. The measures restricting alcohol at all-campus parties etc. are designed to reduce alcohol-related incidents, but they've backfired pretty badly. Additionally, the administration is considering imposing a blanket ban on hard alcohol in undergrad residences, which leads to a whole new chunk of safety concerns.

You can get weed if you really want it. There's no real peer pressure to do anything with any substance.

Health & Safety: Everything is pretty okay in general. I've been the victim of burglary/theft on campus (laptop, other electronics - two separate occasions) and am now extremely paranoid about leaving my door unlocked even to go use the restroom or brush my teeth, as my laptop was stolen in the five minutes I spent in the bathroom. Students don't really understand the importance of knowing the people they let into residences, which leads to incidents such as these.

The university also handles sexual assault poorly.

Overall Experience: The course variety is incredible, and I've had overwhelmingly positive experiences with my professors. However, I feel we would definitely benefit from emphasizing the discussion sections over the lectures, and, when possible, switching to a seminar-style format. Obviously this is difficult with large introductory classes, but research has shown that students learn subjects such as math and physics better from exploration than from lecture-style instruction.

Overall Experience: The alumni network is incredible.

A Stanford degree is apparently super sought-after, and people generally get good jobs after graduating. Many doors are apparently open to those of us who graduate from here etc. etc.

Campus Housing: Housing at Stanford varies widely, with different types, locations, and qualities of dorms/houses. The student staff, however, is consistently enthusiastic and responsible, and the custodial staff are friendly and hard-working.

Overall Experience: Stanford puts effort into making every aspect of student life meaningful. The professors are experts in their fields and are most often (but of course not always) good teachers. The residence and dining staff make the living experience fun and meaningful, helping new and returning students get and stay connected with each other.

Campus Housing: The community in freshman dorms is great - Stanford has huge funds just for each dorm to spend on activities each year. My dorm went skiing, to Cirque du Soleil, laser tag, Disneyland, etc.

Health & Safety: Actually, a burglary did occur at my dorm once this year. No one was hurt, and police were quick to respond and handled the situation well. Generally, I feel safe on campus. There is a campus-wide alert system that operates through text, call, and email, which is very effective.

Overall Experience: Lots of interesting classes to take, and professors are generally quite helpful (it comes down to you, the student, having the desire to approach them or not).

The verdict is in: most students are overwhelmingly happy with their Stanford experience. The combination of challenging academics, undergrad-oriented faculty, diversity, beautiful weather, and a fairly social campus environment all combine to make for a great four years of college. Students, particularly those in engineering or sciences, might find the workload to be especially heavy at times, but most students are capable and want to work hard in the first place. Perhaps the biggest challenge students face at Stanford is just dealing with the other students, who range from hippies to hyper-competitive pre-meds. It makes for an interesting environment, but also a stressful one. However, if you immerse yourself in it long enough, it will eventually start to feel reasonably normal.

Despite the problems that Stanford students find with the University, they overwhelmingly agree that Stanford is “their place,” and they can’t imagine being anywhere else. It seems all the hype and the hefty price tag are well justified by the experiences that students can, and will, have here. If you’re looking for a university with a big name, vibrant population, and a good balance of work and fun, Stanford University will not disappoint.
