Local Area: As St. John's advertises, it's about an hour away from the city. There are various activities one can do in the city.

Local Area: The school itself is in Queens, one of the five boroughs. My school always says how we are in the heart of NYC, but in reality, they are trying to refer to Manhattan, which is a bus+train or walk+train ride away. On average, it will take about 30 min to get to the first stop of Manhattan, which is Lexington Ave and 63rd Street. Manhattan, is of course, very lively and you will never find yourself with nothing to do. The local area around SJU, however, is just your regular suburban/urban area. If you take the bus to the more busy places, such as Flushing, you will find yourself in crowded areas filled with many people and restaurants.

St. John’s is located in the Jamaica Estates, which is a development designed as a residential park. The streets were laid out to fit the contours of the land, and only detached, one-family houses with an attic and two stories were built. St. John’s University is lucky to be located within Jamaica Estates; it is a beautiful residential area. The noise level seems to be moderate, and the majority of necessities are within walking distance. It is a nice mixture of an abundance of homes, but at the same time, there are many stores that help to cater to the students' needs.

On the campus itself, the atmosphere is calmer (except around lunchtime), and there are two high schools present in the area: Jamaica and Bayside. This can add to the noise level in the morning and afternoon when they are getting in and out of school. Even though the campus isn’t in Manhattan, it’s hard to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Crowded buses and noisy neighbors (particularly high school kids) are to be expected. On the plus side, there are so many things to do that students will rarely have to think for long to come up with something to do on a weekend. It’s mostly a matter of outlook and motivation.
