4 College Sophomore

Party Scene: The best parties usually take place at nightclubs.

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: The security is a great thing, always on rounds throughout the day and evening.

3 College Sophomore

Local Area: The local area leaves much to be desired and not many activities can be done here, but the transportation is wonderful and can get you to the city fairly quickly (if it doesn't have any delays, that is)

3 College Sophomore

Administration: The administration itself is okay, it had some issues like having to go through hoops to sign someone in and they crack hard on the drinking (depends on who catches you, really)

3 College Sophomore

Party Scene: There are all sort of events, which is a good way to socialize and whatnot.

5 College Freshman

Majors: There are countless majors and programs related to various areas of study.

5 College Freshman

Majors: I have not had an internship yet but the city location if campus makes transportation very easy.

5 College Freshman

Health & Safety: I always see public safety officers around campus, especially when it begins to get dark. I feel safe.

5 College Freshman

Local Area: Campus is in queens. The location provided students with lots of opportunities to land internships.

3 College Freshman

Scholarships: This is a very expensive school but I did receive some scholarship money.

4 College Freshman

Greek Life: My school had many options for Greek life and here was an overt unity to get more information at the activities fair.

5 College Freshman

Administration: I have never felt unsafe in campus.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Students do not receive much help with off campus housing.

5 College Student

Campus Housing: I stood there for orientation and the dorms were great. I enjoyed my night stay and I was pretty comfortable.

4 College Student

Administration: They are very strict about the visitation. No different sex individuals are allowed to stay in the dorms. I think there's certain amounts of visits one can have.

4 College Student

Greek Life: I see it on social medias a lot. They want people to join and they seems like they pretty accept everyone. I personally think it's really popular there. I'm not sure about their housing.

4 College Student

Scholarships: The financial aid process was a bit confusing. Then, again it's my first time so I know that in the future it'll be easier to understand.

4 College Student

Athletics: Having been to a few basketball games, many students participate to cheer for their team. I'm really anticipating the upcoming basketball season. The school has great team spirit and the team itself shows good performance. I enjoy their games very much.

5 College Student

Majors: If sju really wants you, they'll give you a fee waiver for your application fee. Also, or the arts if you send the needed portfolio on top, you are automatically considered for a scholarship.

5 College Student

Local Area: Seems very safe. I'll have no problems walking to and from school from the trains station. Lots of stores around. The area accepts students in general. While taking the bus one day I saw me middle school coming up from school. The bus was very packed but the older folks didn't seem bothered by the children/ college students at all.

4 College Student

Off-Campus Dining: It's affordable and as a commuter it's convent for me. I just pick some right before/after class real quick.

3 College Freshman

Local Area: Boring, I've never really enjoyed queens.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: I don't dorm, I wouldn't know.

3 College Freshman

Party Scene: I don't party much. I support myself and do not dorm so on the days I have off I'm either working or working on school work, or working out. Some form of work.

3 College Freshman

Athletics: I don't affiliate with sports nor do I dorm, therefore my participation and knowledge about anything sporty is merely a lack thereof.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

St. John’s has its ups and downs, but most students agree, sometimes reluctantly, that the bad outweighs the good. Some argue that with the high tuition cost, students should receive better student services and facilities. The school’s motto is, “We are St. John’s,” but does the administration listen when students speak? The school needs more dorm rooms, better computers, and more people ready to help students instead of giving them the runaround or transferring their calls to someone else. These things are not luxuries, but rather necessities to keep the students and the institution running smoothly.

Going to St. John’s is a good experience, and the name only seems to impress many people, which is a good trademark to use in the workforce. The overwhelming majority of teachers cares about its students. Check out St. John’s extensively before attending to see if it can meet your needs, especially monetary-wise. In 1870, when St. John’s was founded by the Vincentian community, it was supposed to be an answer for the poor students who couldn’t afford schooling; now many feel SJU is making the students poor. The costs are going up each year, but the financial aid is basically staying the same, making it hard for students to attend because of the lack of funding. Explore it for yourself. There’s plenty to enjoy and benefit from, but don’t get caught up in hype.
