Southern Union offers several subjects for online courses, ranging from 098 courses to more advanced classes. To find lists of offered online courses, you can call Student Services or read "The Southerner" (the Southern Union campus newspaper) at the beginning of each semester. Online courses are completed by using the Blackboard system. At the beginning of each semester, especially for students new to Blackboard, each class is offered a tutorial on how to use the system. This includes where to find your grades and assignments, as well as testing and quizzes.

You must be knowledgeable of the Internet and how to use a flash drive to transfer any work. If the students should need help with the Blackboard program, the professors are on hand to assist. Professors at Southern Union are always willing to help students; all you have to do is ask them.

Facts & Statistics

Required Tech Skills
When attending an online course, you will need access to the Internet and have at least one thumb drive (flash drive). You will need to know how to use the flash drive if you are not working at school so that you do not lose your work before you submit it.
Southern Union's online courses are accessed through Blackboard, and the professors are on hand to help you learn all the tricks and shortcuts.
Typical Online Lecture - Single Day
Typically, a lecture day in an online class includes your professor giving the normal lecture in the front of the classroom with the students taking notes as needed. Online class lectures are almost no different from normal class lectures, except that it's all through the computer.
Typical Online Course - Start to Finish
A typical online course begins with the usual "getting to know you" stuff, as you learn more about your professor and fellow students, and then it progresses to assignments and exams through Blackboard. And if the students need it, some professors will help tutor those needing to learn how to use their flash drives. Interaction is completed through discussion boards.
Online Testing & Grading
All tests and quizzes for online courses are found through Blackboard, in a section separate from the rest of your coursework. Your professors will explain further when tests are posted.
