3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: Because the party scene is so large here, there is a definite problem with sexual assault. There are various student organizations that are making a large effort in decreasing that problem such as the women's center. There is counseling available for victims as well as anyone who needs it.

Overall Experience: Classes are small and professors generally make a real effort to get to know students. Don't expect to get good grades without working hard. You want to attend class because your classes are small.

Overall Experience: The Sewanee network is pretty great. There are lots of alums who are ready to help you get an internship or a job.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: There are some really nice dorms, but also some really gross, old dorms. It just depends on your luck. Lots of people apply to live in theme houses or sorority/fraternity houses as well. Those are better options.

Greek Life: There are definitely some snobby sororities just like at any other school, but all in all the Sewanee Greek life scene is good. All of the sororities are local with the exception of one, and most women choose to participate. There are about 5 big sororities on campus, and honestly you pick one based on your personality. I have met some of my closest friends through my sorority, but I also have many friends who chose not to rush. Parties are open to everyone, so it really doesn't make a difference if you rush, but it definitely can be a good thing.

Athletics: Sports aren't really a big deal here, though there is a sense of community that can be found if you are an athlete. Our sports programs are no worse or no better than any other division 3 school.

4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I really love Sewanee all in all. After having found my "niche," my experience has been so much better. It is very preppy, and I am not, so that was a struggle at first. This semester, though, I have been much happier because I found people who I can relate to.

Diversity: Sewanee is slowly becoming a more diverse school.

Greek Life: The Greek organizations are fantastic!

3 College Freshman

Athletics: The club sports outshine the varsity sports.

4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: Not diverse as it could be. It's still fantastic!

3 College Freshman

Athletics: Although our football team is not the greatest, there are usually students who show up to the games to support our team. Sometimes students go to nearby SEC schools for the large games.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I absolutely love Sewanee. The professors are absolutely amazing, and I have already made so many friends. I am looking forward to spending the next four years of my life here!

4 College Sophomore

Diversity: Sewanee is a community, and a community that is accepting to all people. There is great diversity, in everything from ethnic/racial (not as high as some schools, pretty high for a small liberal arts school in TN), economic background, political beliefs, religion (even though we're affiliated with the Episcopal church, I'd say maybe, maybe 1/4 of students describe themselves as practicing episcopalians), and sexual orientation.

Drug Safety: A great number of people at Sewanee drink. A number do not. No one cares either way. There is also a pretty high prevalence of weed, but I think normal compared to the national average for college students. There is no pressure to participate in drinking or smoking etc, and no one will think differently of you if you are uninterested in drinking. There are also plenty of things to do besides going out if you are uninterested in that - for example, the Sewanee Outing Program hosts great trips every weekend and multiple times throughout the week and have great trips available especially during big party weekends.

Health & Safety: Police are at every party -- at first this freaked me out, until I realized that they are only there to make sure no one hurts themselves or someone else. You will not get in trouble for alcohol. There is a very strict and upheld honor code at Sewanee, therefore almost all students leave everything unlocked and computers and backpacks can be left where they are studying without fear of anything being stolen.

5 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: Professors are always there for you, whatever you need. Strong community of people, great opportunities on campus and off, especially post-graduation. Very small class sizes that are mostly discussion based -- you must go to class and be prepared! If you're into anything outdoorsy, you will find somewhere to do it here. I like to tell people you have to want to come here to come here. We're all big granola people and love it together.

Overall Experience: Alumni network is VERY strong -- they love to help out Sewanee students and graduates. Career services is extremely helpful in anything you need help with or need to know more about. Sewanee is generally well-known and appreciated, those who have heard of us really appreciate the value of a degree from this school. If you haven't heard of us, you probably couldn't have gotten in.

Campus Housing: Everyone at Sewanee is pretty chill when it comes to enforcement of rules. Of course anything blatantly illegal or against the rules (besides drinking really) will get you written up. Being written up usually consists of a $25 fine. Furthermore, the Assistant Proctors (our version of RAs) aren't there to get you in trouble. They are the same people who go out with you and hang out with you, so they are not interested in catching you with alcohol. If you drink in the common rooms, that's a different story, but what you do in your own room, as long as you aren't being too loud as to disturb others, they don't care. Residence halls, with the exception of 4, are all very central campus and a 5 minute walk to most classes. They vary in amenities based on when they were built or renovated - its the luck of the draw.

Greek Life: Greek life at Sewanee is totally different. For starters, all events on campus are open, so anyone can go to any party. This must be the case for a school of Sewanee's size, otherwise parties would be extremely small. From a girl's perspective, sororities are TOTALLY different at Sewanee. I hesitate to tell anyone I'm in a sorority for the stereotypes it conjures, but at Sewanee, sororities aren't the biggest deal - you rush where you feel most comfortable, if at all, and no one really cares where you go. For most sororities, it is pretty much a way to get to know more people and have events and pregames - but again, after 9 pm everything is open and EVERYONE is welcome.
