Samford requires its students to live on campus until they are 21 years of age. Understandably, exceptions can be made, but overall this rule promotes unity, with students living in close proximity to one another. It is hard to imagine how at home one can feel at Samford without actually living there.
Birmingham is a family-friendly city, so there are numerous safe neighborhoods that are welcoming to college students. Simply living with roommates cuts down on individual costs, making off-campus living quite affordable. Certain apartment complexes offer student discounts, as well. Some students even lease houses, making for perfect bachelor pads. Houses are usually for those who enjoy cooking their own food whenever they like or for those who want to be out on their own a little earlier than their friends. This would also be a great opportunity for them to buy pets, for fish are the only acceptable animals in campus dormitories.
