Off-Campus Dining

4 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: There are many places downtown where students can get good quality food for a decent price. I enjoy Mellow Mushroom (a pizza parlor) and Caminos (a coffe shop and bakery).

4 College Junior

Off-Campus Dining: We are well within walking distance from downtown and have within our reach anything from fast food to more high end; it's really up to us what we choose but we definitely have plenty of options.

5 College Junior

Off-Campus Dining: Oh my gosh there are so many options!!!

Pizza: Mellow Mushroom, Burk Street Pizza, Chain-options

Mexican: Senor Bravos is within walking distance and yummy! There are other options too, I just always go there!

Chinese: Buffet down the street, lots of delivery

Japanese: Sushi, Hibachi, Tokyo

Italian: Olive Garden, Cafes, Local Cuisine

Coffee: Starbucks, Krispy Kreme, Krankies, Camino, MORE

Those are the major options I can think of, but Winston is a mecca of food options! I am from a VERY small town, so having more than one burger, mexican, and italian place at my fingertips was AMAZING, but I am still in awe of the number of goal is to try them all before graduation...I have a long way to go. You do have to drive to get to most food options, but bumming a ride off a friend makes it and adventure that I love! I have a car and am always willing to lend a ride, especially for food!!

Disclaimer: I am not vegetarian, pescaterian, vegan, I am not the best source for those options. I know a lot of my vegan friends go to Mooney's and Mellow Mushroom.

Off-Campus Dining: It's really just your run of the mill fast food places. Winston isn't the place you're going to find nonchain restaurants that cater to the local college population. Nonchain restaurants are priced for the business people who live there.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: I don't eat out often

Off-campus dining in Winston-Salem is pretty varied, and there are plenty of options for students on a budget. Salem Tavern is close but expensive, while Mayberry's is great for a sandwich and ice cream. If you're willing to walk 15–30 minutes both ways, Fourth Street has lots of restaurants, including a campus favorite, Mellow Mushroom, which offers parmesan-dusted pizzas and an array of toppings. Noma's is a new place that is gaining popularity and is right across the street from Mellow Mushroom. For busy days or late nights, there's an array of sub, pizza, and Chinese places that deliver to campus. La Botana is a pretty cool, cheap place for Mexican food, and Athena Greek Taverna is nice place for lunch. Little Caesar's has decent cheese and pepperoni pizzas for $5.55 every day.

Students should definitely take advantage of off-campus dining places. For the most part, they are delicious, especially when compared to the on-campus fare. Students have to make sure they budget for eating off campus, as even cheap (around $7 per entrée) places can quickly eat up spending money. The best advice is to try to eat on campus when possible and to save money for special occasions, after the refectory closes around 7 p.m., and when the campus food is especially bad (like during the weekends when quality and variety take a dive). While the 15–30 minute walk to downtown may sound daunting, it's actually pretty feasible when you have a whole afternoon with nothing to do and friends who are willing to make the trek with you. The walk there certainly helps you work up an appetite, and the walk back helps you burn off calories!
