Campus Food

3 College Sophomore

Campus Food: Not terrible, but not great. Sometimes the food is good, but sometimes it isn't... and at least they make an effort to provide alternative options for people with food allergies or other issues.

Campus Food: The ice cream is always great, and Alphonsus is the bomb diggity.

1 College Sophomore

Campus Food: I went to two different boarding schools and my sister went to another one where I often visited her. I used to get sick of the food that was offered at boarding school but it always tasted good, they had more options, and everything was healthier. Those three schools all had food that was far superior than the food at Rhodes College. Here are almost no healthy options. The "healthy" options they have are bad, such as lettuce being wilted and salad toppings from a can. The food served at the rat does not change very often either. Even though they have vegetarian options, it is extremely difficult to be a vegetarian here. Many times, there have not been labels on the soup and I have had to ask the Rat employees if the soup is vegetarian. They usually have to check and then respond with a 'yes'. However, when I taste it, I find out it that it had chicken broth in it or something that is not vegetarian (this is a problem within Memphis as a whole - they do not seem to understand what vegetarian means and some restaurants do not have any or only have one vegetarian option). The vegetarian options do not give enough nutrition and I stopped my vegetarian diet. There are only two places on campus to get a full meal, which is annoying. The Lair runs out of food items quickly, such as wheat rolls or a certain type of meat, which limits options even further. If you eat dinner late, it is very frustrating. The Lair stops accepting meal plans at 8:30 PM and you have to pay with Lynx Bucks (if you are out, you have to pay with your credit card or cash). That wouldn't be so bad except they close all the other stations and leave open the station with the most unhealthy options available - the Grill.

3 College Freshman

Campus Food: The food is dull and boring. There is little to no diversity in food options excluding the wok station. A lot of dishes are made up like the “Mexican Lasagna”.

3 College Freshman

Campus Food: I don't really mind it as much as my friends do. I am not a picky eater at all.

In the past, campus dining has been one of the biggest complaints from Rhodes students; however, many are now admitting that it's getting better. The Rat and the Lair are the places to go when you want food, and each student seems to have a preference between the two. The Rat is an "all-you-can-eat" place that gets better every day. Students used to complain about the lack of variety and healthy options, but then, practically overnight, the staff started making better-tasting food, and now it's surpassing the Lair as "favorite eatery." The Lair, while reliably delicious, can also get monotonous, and the often high-priced meals don't always fit into the meal plan.

Meal plans are required if you live on campus, and the cheapest plan includes 15 meals each week (unless you live in the EV apartments). Unless you are an athlete, you should heavily consider starting off with the smaller meal plan because it's surprisingly difficult to make the most of your meal plan, and you don't want to waste your money. There's also a Starbucks in the Middle Ground, so you can get your coffee fix before your 8 a.m. class and throughout the day. Many students do wish that there were more late-night options, though. Everything closes at 11 p.m., so be prepared for many late-night Taco Bell runs.

Did You Know?
  • Like fried chicken? "Fried Chicken Fridays" at the Rat are something Rhodes students love.
  • It used to be that most students preferred the Lair and absolutely hated the Rat; however, in Spring 2011, the Rat suddenly turned itself around and started producing great options. Now it's becoming a much more popular place to grab lunch before class.
  • If you want food late at night, you'll be hard-pressed to find any on campus unless you raid your suitemates' room or hit up a snack machine. Nothing on campus is open after 11 p.m. The Lair has good snacks if you make it over in time, though.
