4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: Health services is great. They're closed on weekends which is not very convenient.

Campus Housing: Housing is one of the only downsides to PSU. If you're not in one of the more expensive residence halls, you're basically living in squalor. Housing staff attempts to keep it as clean and maintained as possible, but when the buildings are almost 100 years old, there are structural problems and hazards with it.

3 College Freshman

Weather: It's central Pennsylvania. Precipitation is a hassle, and winters are extremely cold

Overall Experience: I am so glad I chose Penn State. It's what a college experience should be. All of the opportunities are here- you just have to take them!

2 College Freshman

Technology: Labs are extremely slow and there isn't wireless everywhere on campus

5 College Freshman

Athletics: Our football team is the best, in spite of the circumstances

3 College Freshman

Campus Quality: Everything is great but the dorms need remodeled

Local Area: Being here feels like you can accomplish anything.

Guys & Girls: There is a good distribution of interests, looks and relationships. Some are only looking for a hook-up while some are looking for a long-term relationship. There are a lot of people at PSU so there is a good variety in interests and ways of dressing..etc.

Parking: Parking is always a hassle on and off campus. Many times I just don't drive because I know it would be more convenient to walk than to find a spot and pay for the meters till 10pm.

Administration: Some things, such as parking are taken very seriously on campus and sometimes it is too strict.

Athletics: Athletics is very important at school and intramural sports are important to many students. Penn State is currently revamping some of their athletic facilities for non-athletes.

Off-Campus Housing: Personally, I found some great off-campus housing. However, it is not that way for everyone. The apartments downtown are very expensive and not always of the best quality.

3 College Junior

Technology: During my freshman year, there was no wireless in the dorms so that was extremely convenient while trying to do work in the dorms with friends outside of my room. You need a personal printer because Penn State only allows 110 free pages of printing each semester.

Health & Safety: I feel extremely safe on campus. There aren't many crimes in the area, so that definitely helps

2 College Sophomore

Weather: No matter how much snow hits, the doors are always open. Nothing closes them down.

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: I've been submitting info for months and more things keep rolling my way. The process is tedious.

3 College Sophomore

Parking: Expensive for parking permit and the restrictive rules for parking.

3 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: The boy to girl ratio is so uneven but it managed to work and made a more stern environment.

3 College Sophomore

Diversity: There are many people from different background and very accepting to new cultures.

5 College Junior

Athletics: Penn State is a very healthy campus. There are many gyms that are almost always full. Sports are usually important to students when they have free time. Varsity sports are supported by the community and have a lot of fan support.

Despite common reservations about the location and climate, most Penn State students are fiercely loyal to their alma mater. Penn State boasts one of the largest alumni populations in the United States; graduates are proud of their degrees, and employers recognize the University’s name immediately. Although the campus is located in a very rural area, school is technologically up-to-date and on the cutting-edge of current research.

Aside from academics, PSU is also known for its social scene, especially in relation to sports and parties. Nittany Lion football—home of the 2008 Big Ten Champions—is a national draw and a point of pride for both the University and the town of State College. For anyone interested in playing or watching varsity sports, PSU is a top choice. Penn State has also been ranked highly by many polls and “party school” surveys as one of the top party schools in the nation. While it certainly isn’t the wildest town, these rankings are definitely accurate. The small-town setting and large-school atmosphere makes for little else in the way of entertainment, so it can be hard to avoid encountering the party scene during your time as a student. Still, the mix of work and leisure seems to work well for most of the student body, and academic standards at Penn State remain relatively high. It’s easy to spend four years at Penn State as an ever-serious student, focused completely on whatever you choose to study. With so many opportunities to relax nearby, balance and moderation are some of the best skills to learn from your four years in college.
