2 College Freshman

Health & Safety: My friend was walking back from his car at 4 am because he had to drive another friend to the hospital. He was harassed by locals. Most of the blue lights are out of order and have been all year. There are about 6 blue lights on the outskirts of campus. Police are so worried about giving students underages they don't care about safety.

Greek Life: One frat: Sigma Pi. They're the poorest excuse for a frat I have ever seen

2 College Freshman

Athletics: No one cares about anything here

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Apartments are very nice but the prices are ridiculous

3 College Freshman

Party Scene: Everyone just drinks in their apartments. Everyone leaves on the weekends and goes to main campus

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: Every fast food chain you want but you have to drive and there are not many good local places to eat

1 College Freshman

Administration: It is ridiculous. The town is so poor they will fine you for any thing.

2 College Freshman

Campus Food: No selection and very poor quality

2 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Old, Small, Dusty, Dirty. Very poor

4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I am happy with my college selection

4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I think there will be lots of opportunities

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: Safety is good at Altoona campus

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Dorm rooms are average size in Freshman housing. Bathrooms are OK. Overall dorm cleanliness is OK too. Average dorm living

3 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: There are many different types of guys on campus, and if you can't find one you like here, that's okay. There are plenty at University Park you might like, or just somewhere else.

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: There are two sororities, one social fraternity, and one co-ed veterans fraternity. One sorority is Gamma Phi Beta, and most of them are the prettier ones and partiers. The other is Alpha Sigma Tau and they think they are different, but aren't really. The one social fraternity is Sigma Pi. They do have a chapter house. There is also a co-ed veterans fraternity called Omega Delta Sigma, which is pretty new on campus. They seem like cool guys.

Off-Campus Housing: I have never lived off-campus but I know there are pros and cons to each place. Nittany Pointe is the most populated and maybe the nicest, but I hear there is often trouble with the landlords. Pennview seems kinda nice and Pennview east seems even nicer. Whenwood looks like a dump. College Park looks nice it's just far from campus. Pennview, Pointe, and Whenwood are all within walking distance. There are also many houses you can look at, it just depends on the landlord.

3 College Sophomore

Party Scene: If you're into partying, pointe and pennview are mostly where it's at. They both get busted a lot.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: There are four dorm halls on campus. Oak is a traditional freshman hall with small rooms, communal showers, and lots of community. It is the closest one to most of the classroom buildings Maple is very similar, but the rooms are a little bigger. It is closest to Port Sky and the gym. Spruce and Cedar are both all suite style, air conditioned and carpeted with Cedar being a little bigger. Although some freshman live in Cedar, it is mostly upperclassmen. As long as you apply early enough for a housing contract, it is pretty easy to get one. It is important to be noted however, that there is not enough housing for all students and even all freshmen.

Campus Food: There is only one dining hall on campus, and it's fine. The biggest problem is that it is very repetitive with a pasta, salad, sandwich, and burger station and then one or two speciality items per day.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Nittany Pointe is way too expensive but seems like a good quality place, but is only known for it's parties.

5 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: There is a huge variety of off-campus dining, some of the best places around!

4 College Freshman

Administration: The Administration isn't too strict but strict enough to keep things in line.

Party Scene: Personally, I don't get involved in college parties. From what I've heard, campus police don't tolerate it and get involved fairly easily. Also, the people I see partying the most are the ones dropping out, so I don't think it affects anyone too positively.

Scholarships: The financial aid process was fairly simple, but can be a headache trying to figure it out.

3 College Freshman

Campus Food: The dining halls are nice but more booths would be exceptional. There isn't much variety, and the same things are served every week. More foods similar to restaurant or home-cooked meals would be better. Many things provided are foreign to me and flavored in all the wrong ways. There should be many more options as to where we can get our food, not just five stations. Also they should extend their hours, not everyone can make the lunch or supper hours and then have very limited choices. The meal plan is difficult to in that you don't get money back that you don't spend so you either lose money or waste it trying to spend it all.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

The overall experience at Penn State Altoona is a great one for most, and many say that the campus has exceeded their expectations. The smaller campus is great—and if you’re concerned about a smaller campus equaling a small-minded student body, don’t be. The Penn State Altoona campus is a perfect balance of size and personality, and the atmosphere allows for people to get to know one another in a number of situations. This is a place where friendships bloom and flourish to their fullest extent, and are then kept up long after graduation.

The professors at Penn State Altoona are all very open about their research, and each one is excited to be teaching. All the professors are real intellectuals, and they have such an abundance of knowledge in their field, as well as many other topics. And they are helpful to all students, regardless of whether you know them well or are taking one class with them. At college, students learn the most from the people who assign the textbooks, not the actual textbooks themselves (although some professors at Penn State Altoona write their own textbooks), and this University is no different.
