3 College Junior

Online Courses: only taken one class and passed with an A. The basic core classes are available but other courses should be available as well.

5 College Junior

Online Courses: I don't have any complaints

3 College Sophomore

Online Courses: I haven't actually taken any online classes

3 Recent Alumnus

Online Courses: Online courses are not for everyone. Sometimes it is a little difficult to learn the information because I am more a visual learner. Also, the communication is a little off sometimes because you're talking through the discussion board instead of face to face.

3 College Senior

Online Courses: I had a hybrid online course. There was half in class and half online. It was okay. Typically the workload was piled all together and do on one set day.

Online courses, or distance learning classes, at Palm Beach State College are convenient and fun. While many of the online courses are general education classes, there are several other course subjects available. "Going Green" is another advantage of online classes. All course materials are online and may be printed at students' discretion. Say goodbye to the days of messy folders! You can interact with your professors and classmates through emails, chat rooms, discussion boards, and other tools. Tests may be done online or at any one of Palm Beach State Colleges' many Testing Centers. Not sure if distance learning is the right fit for you? Before you begin any of the online classes, there are several self-assessment quizzes that you can take to see if you’re prepared for distance learning. Technical support and Instructional Tech Specialists are also available to those who are taking online classes in case they have any problems or questions.

Facts & Statistics

Required Tech Skills
Basic computer and technical skills are required to take online courses. To take distance learning classes, you have to know simple skills, such as how to turn on a computer, work simultaneously with multiple applications, and organize files and folders on the hard drive. Technical support is available on the Web or by phone if necessary.
Typical Online Lecture - Single Day
Online classes typically contain 20 to 30 students. Students complete required readings, post on weekly discussion boards and provide feedback to other students' postings, and participate in live chats with students and the professor. Classes are usually administered through Blackboard, and tests are often conducted on campus.
Typical Online Course - Start to Finish
Online classes aren't exactly at your own pace, and they require a fair share of work. Classes require a lot of note taking and participation and generally include at least one group project and one major test. Assignments are given a reasonable deadline, and professors are usually good with extensions if they see that you are trying to do your best.
Online Testing & Grading
Some professors prefer that students for online courses take tests at the on-campus testing center. Others allow fully online testing through Blackboard. Grades are generally calculated based largely on mid-term and final exam grades, with some additional graded assignments, projects, or papers. The number and weight of these graded assignments varies by professor and subject.
Did You Know?
Students take distance learning courses for a variety of reasons. Whether you're disabled, without reliable transportation, or have personal commitments, distance learning courses ensure that you're always able to further your education even though you may be unable to attend classes at your nearest campus. And they can be accessed from any computer. So you don't always have to be at the same location. That's education on the go!
