Scholarships: Returning to the "big school" theme, a necessary evil that goes along with it is the massive underlying bureaucracy required to keep it running at all (if not always smoothly). Although I did eventually have no problem getting the loans that I needed, the process took a very long time at the start, and cut it so closely that I worried whether it would go through in time for classes to begin. The office lost my documents several times. Anytime students are working in an office setting, you can almost count on the fact that things are not going to get handled properly. This is not against their capabilities, but rather an issue of simple lack of experience in such an environment. The problem is that it is in this environment where other students' documents need to be properly handled, so there are others at risk when the efficacy of student workers is in question.

Campus Quality: Organizations and Varied Opportunities – Because OSU is such a huge university (60,000+ students), it has a wide variety of things in which students can get involved. The list of student organizations seems endless, and there is something for everyone. If you don't find something that is for you, the process to creating it is also fairly painless. The student facilities are beautiful; the new Ohio Union building is great, and is suited for all types of meetings and events, from balls and galas to small, focused meetings.

Campus Quality: I love The Ohio State University. I had planned to attend Miami University all through high school and chose last minute, to attend Ohio State instead. I am so pleased with my decision. I have met so many amazing people and made so many wonderful memories. And the career opportunities offered by OSU and around Columbus are almost unbeatable.

Drug Safety: Drinking Over Drugs – There is a great deal of alcohol consumption that goes on in public and at parties. Drinking is the most popular activity. I don't see drugs being as prevalent.

4 College Student

Transportation: Buses Go Around the Entire Campus – OSU has a wonderful bus system, with prompt and regular arrivals that bring students all around the large campus. It is very convenient, and free for all students.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Food: There are a variety of places to find many different types of ethnic and Americanized foods. The prices are reasonably and all food stations are extremely sanitary.

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: Occasional Restaurant-Eater – I don't eat off-campus all that much, but the experiences I've had were pretty good. The prices were pretty average, and most restaurants are an easy bus ride if they aren't within walking distance.

Campus Quality: Just Like New! Ohio State is overflowing with fantastic facilities! The libraries have any book you could ever need, the dining halls are clean and organized, and the main recreational center (called the RPAC) is the biggest gym facility I've ever seen. Everything is so well kept, it looks like new. We also have the student union, which just celebrated its one-year anniversary, where you could spend hours exploring or just studying.

Local Area: College City – While it is hard to get around the whole city without a car, there are tons of activities on campus and within walking distance to make the weekends fun. There are lots parks, some interesting museums, and multiple shopping centers nearby. And there are so many student groups, there's almost always something going on on-campus to take part in.

4 College Freshman

Technology: The Computers on campus are great and can be found in any of the many libraries with wireless access and printing at a small cost. For student athletes; we receive access to computer labs with free printing.

3 College Senior

Weather: Bad Winter – Winters in Columbus are awful. We rarely get snow days so be prepared to walk 40 minutes to class in -20 F weather and black ice covering the ground.

1 College Senior

Parking: No Cars for Freshmen – Freshmen cannot bring cars. If you live off campus, close parking is nearly impossible. You will often have to park 10 minutes away from where you actually live.

3 College Senior

Guys & Girls: Guys Are Unique – There's a wide range of men on campus. City boys, country boys, geeks, nerds, jocks, outcasts.

2 College Junior

Administration: Just Get Out of the Dorms – Again, not far removed from what would be considered "typical" on a college campus. Ohio has been adamant about maintaining its no-smoking laws since passing, so if there are any doors or windows in view, be prepared for an RA to come outside and tell you to leave if you light up. Happened to me on numerous occasions, as surprising as it sounds. RAs and HDs won't hesitate to fortify the typical campus policies regarding drinking, drugs, etc. so if you do anything remotely "questionable," either stay out of view or be prepared to defend yourself. Fortunately, the university is pretty laid back outside of residence life. Students can swipe into any building on campus throughout the day, visitors can come and go. As long as you don't interfere with res life, OSU should stay out of your way.

Off-Campus Housing: An Entire City at Your Disposal – Off-campus housing is where OSU really shines. Whether a house or an apartment, you'll be able to find anything you're looking for around here, and plenty of it. Once again, the size of the school plays a big role here. There are tons of options all over Columbus with a wide range of accommodations, prices, and landlords. There's so much out there that it's up to you where you end up. Just don't let the magnitude of everything overwhelm you.

Campus Housing: Get Off Campus, ASAP – The dorms here aren't far removed from dorms anywhere else. For a large extra fee tacked onto your tuition, you get the luxuries of tight spaces, buildings desperately in need of repair and maintenance, roommates, and a front row view of just how relentlessly city-like campus can be sometimes. Yes, you have the advantage of living close to classes, which, given the size of the campus, is a bigger deal than it sounds. Unfortunately, every negative assumption and cliche one can make about college dorms apply to most all buildings here at OSU. In fact, OSU seems behind the curve in terms of on-campus living. The only buildings that aren't disgusting (maybe 3-5 buildings, grand total, across all of campus) require upper classman status and fees for the school year that run steeper than signing a lease and paying rent for 12 months. Freshman are required to live on-campus here, but beyond that, I can't in good conscience recommend living anywhere on campus, north or south.

Campus Quality: The school pride here is unbelievable! Having Michigan Week always gets everyone pumped up for the big game. Also, in the four main freshman towers, the social scene is always fun!

4 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Normal Looks and Life – The people in Columbus are a wide range. However, most of them are about average. On a typical day a guy would wear jeans or sweatpants and a sweatshirt while girls would wear jeans or yoga pants and a sweatshirt. Some occassionaly get dressed up on the weekends, but nothing too fancy and rarely ever do girls wear heels.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Off Campus Housin Is a Struggle – Off Campus housing in Columbus is very expensive. It is nearly $500 without utilities to live in a house. Apartments are a little bit less expensive, but not significantly. Hometeam Properties is awful to work with and are worried more about themselves than their tenants. Finally, housing goes fast. If you start the search before Christmas break you will get one without a doubt though!

Weather: When it rains or snows bad the camus will close or the parking and driving will be tough

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Not that bad but you have to remenber it is a college campus so there will be drugs

3 College Sophomore

Diversity: Ohio State prides itself on being diverse, in every sense of the word, and it does have students from almost every country. You just often find yourself asking what the percentage of minorities actually is.

4 College Sophomore

Athletics: Get Involved, Easily. Athletics at Ohio State is HUGE. The workout facilities are state-of-the-art and each facility has a friendly atmosphere. School spirit is top-notch, especially during football season, but support for other varsity sports such as basketball, baseball, soccer, crew and hockey doesn't fall short either. If you aren't a star athlete, or want to try out a new sport you've never heard of, there are people playing it. And Ohio State has an involvement fair each quarter and a website set up specifically to help anyone get involved.

4 College Student

Off-Campus Dining: There are tons of off-campus dining choices within a few miles of campus. Chipotle, Five Guys, Panera, BW3's, and Applebees are all nearby.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: Security and Intelligence – I am a female in a very heavily male dominated field, and I feel that professors underestimate me because of that. However, I believe that that works to my advantage as it gives me the ability to surprise them and show them what I can do. I have made excellent contacts with people from the military as well as federal offices such as the CIA and FBI.

There is a reason the Buckeye Nation is considered to be so devoted; an overwhelming love for OSU is evident in student responses, and in the loyalty of alumni to their alma mater. Each person has his or her own reasons for loving the University, and there are quite a few of them. Some students feel that the academics are top-notch and have found exactly the programs they wanted; others lean toward the athletic success of the Buckeye teams, while some just feel that the friendships and bonds they have made are enough to make their tenure at OSU worthwhile. At any rate, everyone can agree that being a Buckeye creates a special bond between you and nearly 50,000 other students, which you will carry with you for the rest of your life.

Once you get past the sheer size of the University, it will really become a second home. After only a quarter of classes, you won't be able to cross the Oval without seeing someone you know. Ohio State is truly the smallest large university you will find. The people are known for their friendly attitudes, and alumni are scattered across the nation. If you choose to go to OSU, you're choosing a school with a name that's well known, both in the workplace and in the college community. Few students ever regret their time at Ohio State, and most consider their college experience to be among the best offered in the Big Ten and the country.
