Campus Quality

5 College Junior

Campus Quality: I love being on campus. Every spot is beautiful and can be transformed into the perfect study spot. The quad is the best place on campus - you can get work done or sit and talk to friends or professors. There are always events to attend, whether small professionalization panels or large dances.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Quality: Student life on campus is great! The quad is a great place to hangout on sunny days (Which is basically everyday).

3 College Freshman

Campus Quality: Oxy hosts many student events!

Most Occidental students complain about the general lack of facilities and available entertainment on campus, specifically because of the emptiness of the Eagle Rock area. Without a lot of variety and with very few events, Oxy facilities rate very poorly. There is, unfortunately, not a lot to do on the Occidental campus, and the variety of events are often lacking. The student-run Programming Board does put on quite a few events, which combined with the programs that clubs put on and the theater department's plays gives students some things to do on campus. This can become stale, however, simply because by the end of the year the same events happen over and over again. A lot of students complain about the dances, simply because most money for events goes to them, and very little else is put on that has much value. The weekends are particularly lacking, as the campus seems to shut down for Friday and Saturday nights. If a dance or football game is going on, there can be a slight rise in the atmosphere on campus, though. Most students usually end up spending their weekends in their dorms, although a good number seem to be going off campus for entertainment as well. Certain campus parties and plays do liven it up at times, but there are still many gaps in programming, which combined with the lack of variety makes the situation even worse.

The academic facilities such as the library are top-notch, though, and most students have nothing but good things to say about them. The library gets the highest praise, as students find it to be one of the best places to get work done on campus. They also find it to be a second home, as some students will often take naps while working or eating their lunches and eat dinners there during finals week.

  • RA: Resident advisors, students who monitor and take care of the other students in their dorm.
  • Stewie Beach: Popular place on the upper side of campus where people hang out, tan, and play volleyball, Frisbee, or other games.
  • TT Time: The time after 9 p.m. when every place to eat is closed but the famous Taco Trucks.
  • Birthday in the Fountain: Oxy has a long-standing tradition of throwing someone into the fountain for their birthday. Many people get together and plan the kidnapping and transportation of the victim, and it's considered a large compliment to the person being thrown in when there are a lot of people there to do it. When they do find the person on his or her birthday, they capture them, drive or walk them down to the fountain, and throw them into two feet of water.
  • Burning of freshman papers: At the end of every semester, freshmen congregate to burn their papers from their core classes.
  • Sex on the Beach: Sex on the Beach is a long-standing tradition. For over 20 years, the Residence Life staff of Stewart Cleland Hall puts on the party, usually with help from others on the upper side of campus. Sex on the Beach was named one of the 10 best college parties by Playboy magazine and continues to this day.
Urban Legends
There are supposedly ghosts in both the library and Newcomb Hall. The ones in the library are said to have scared one student who was trapped in the library after it closed so badly that his hair went white and he lost his vision.
Favorite Things To Do
Club Oxy is a dance put on by the Programming Board and KOXY, the campus radio station; Wednesday Night Movie showcases a recently released movie shown in one of the school's auditoriums every Wednesday night; Sex on the Beach is a yearly campus party hosted by the staff of the Stewart-Cleland Residence Hall that was once rated as one of the 10 best college parties by Playboy magazine. It is popular to check out friends acting in school plays and productions in Keck Theater. Local bands play in the quad during lunch or at Samuelson Pavilion. The Office of Student Life has a department called the Programming Board that is specifically responsible for putting on events across campus including weekly movie showings, dances, theme parties, political debate series, and even video game tournaments.
