Please read this! I wish I would have known the truth about this school before I came here. If you are not white, DO NOT COME HERE! There is a lot of racism and classism here. Friend groups are segregated by race. All of the indians are friends with only each other. All of the whites are only friends with each other etc. I did not get along with 1 student of my race in freshman year & my life has been made hell ever since then. Student clubs are impossible to get into - (ex: finance clubs require you to have prior finance experience before joining)... How is that possible for an 18 year old? Weather is awful. Social scene is awful - absolutely no party scene & dating is a mess. There is grade deflation. STEM classes here weed out pre-med hopefuls and force them into the arts. I got forced into the arts due to impossible requirements. School facilities are horrible. Bad food on campus and in Evanston area. No nightlife nearby. Bad college town. Bad experience overall.
I would not recommend this institution to anyone! They have TERRIBLE communication and do not care about the individual person at all. They are very rigid and do nothing to handle unique situations. This was my dream school! I applied and was accepted early decision, I had no doubts about where I wanted to continue my education after high school. After a year and a half, I have learned that they do not care about the individual student AT ALL; there is a sink-or-swim mentality campus-wide. It is ingrained in everything at Northwestern. They operate on their prestige and treat people like they don't matter because they can! It is NORTHWESTERN. They don't have to budge or accommodate. It is their way or no way. It is unfortunate that this is the normal behavior. They have a superiority complex and truly need to be humbled. With the cost of attendance at this school, no student should feel unvalued and as if they don't matter. To anyone considering this university, PLEASE reconsider.
Northwestern has an incredible network of professors who are preforming cutting-edge work in all their fields. Impressively, after an entire undergrad career there is only one professor who I would name as not a good professor, and that review is simply isolated to their teaching ability, not their subject knowledge. The learning support system is also extensive, and students are incredibly supportive as well. There is a culture of enabling yourself and those around you to reach new heights. While all the academics and research are amazing, I would say Northwestern needs to work on its accessibility to mental healthcare and ties to the greater Chicagoland community. There could be many more community outreach programs designed to benefit the diverse and interesting Chicago population, from academics to student life.
