3 College Freshman

Scholarships: Finding a scholarship that NC State offers can be very hard. I was only able to find one and I still didn't get it. But financial aid can always be very helpful.

Academics: I love the psychology department at NC State! It is filled with students who are very interested in the field and are willing to help you understand your topics of interest. The instructors are also very enthusiastic about teaching and helping you understand the material. The only setback is taking the intro to psychology class. It can be interesting sometimes, but boring, depending on the topic.

Academics: I definitely find the academic program challenging, but it definitely depends on your instructor. Some are legitimate professors who make the learning a experience a great one, while some instructors don't seem to care about how well you understand the material which makes you regret signing up for the class.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: It is extremely convenient living on campus and it helps a lot with meeting new people. The dorms can vary greatly in terms of size, but they are clean and are kept clean by the cleaning staff. I am very excited for my next year living on campus.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: There are many different places to live off campus and for the most part they are nice places with most of the neighbors being other NC State students. The biggest issue is the amount of crime in the area.

4 College Freshman

Majors: I am very happy thus far with engineering at NCSU. They want you to have a job after you get out, and unless you are severely slacking, you most certainly will.

4 College Freshman

Academics: Engineering is a tough major at any school, but especially at NCSU. You will be challenged, but nothing is out of reach.

4 College Freshman

Academics: NCSU is renowned for its engineering, as thus far I have no complaints in regards to my professors and my education.

4 College Freshman

Transportation: While NCSU has many pick up locations and transportation running around the clock, the buses aren't always consistant with the schedule which can be confusing

4 College Freshman

Transportation: The free buses that run around campus are great. You can also ride the city buses for free as an NC State student. You can also rent a bike as needed from the recreation center.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Dorm life is dorm life. Not too expensive, but there's always the chance of awful suitemates. It's certainly convenient to live on campus, but there are tons of off-campus housing options nearby.

5 College Freshman

Scholarships: Financial aid has been great, the office is easy to reach and communicate with. Be sure to get in FAFSA by the deadline, though.

4 College Freshman

Academics: I am currently a part of the First Year College program because I was accepted as an Undecided major. Fortunately, this program has given me the opportunity to explore and network with others who have already declared their majors. Assignments focus on allowing students to explore their options and to narrow their interests by talking to representatives and other students who are studying in the fields that they are most interested in.

2 College Freshman

Parking: Permit costs are overly expensive and parking is sort of limited on the part of campus where most of the classes are held. Freshman parking is also really far away from main campus.

4 College Freshman

Academics: NC State is very vigorous when it comes to academics. I chose this school because of its phenomenal academic and graduation reputation. They offer numerous resources to aid students with their education including the University Tutorial Center and the University Counseling Center in order to help students who struggle with learning disabilities and test anxieties.

4 College Freshman

Athletics: The Athletics are very competitive and our school provides an ample amount of resources for our athletes.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: It is a freshman dorm and all that comes with it. But, I liked my freshman experience in the dorm. Made a lot of friends and always something going on.

4 College Freshman

Majors: I am in first year college program. This was a good track for me because I wasn't sure of my intended major. Lectures, testing, and counseling with advisors has helped me decide on my college track.

3 College Freshman

Campus Food: Campus dining is decent at first. As the year goes on, the food gets tiring. I am a vegetarian, so it is especially difficult. The food at Port City Java is pretty good and Atrium is ok if you aren't a vegetarian. If you like to eat generally healthy, you will probably have trouble finding food that satisfies you. If you like eating burgers and fried food, you should be fine.

4 College Freshman

Majors: I am a Biological sciences major with a concentration in human anatomy. This major is essentially the "pre-med" tract at NCSU. I have a great advisor that is so helpful about applying to medical school, knowing what I need to do to study for the MCAT, and telling me when would be the best time for me to take classes. I have good instructors that tailor my classes (the ones that aren't directly biology classes- like physics, calculus 1 and 2) to my major, since state has specific classes designed to tailor the needs of biological sciences majors. I enjoy my classes very much, they are intellectually stimulating to me, but I still have free time to learn outside of the classroom. There are many opportunities to learn about applying to medical school, applying for internships, and shadowing positions through HealthPac. HealthPac is an organization on campus designed to be a resource for all students planning on going to medical school (not just those in the Biological sciences-human anatomy concentration). I very strongly suggest that students sign up for HealthPac if they are even considering attending medical school after they graduate NCSU.

Local Area: Raleigh is a place of diversity. There are opportunities for all age groups and economic status. Raleigh is the North Carolina capital, so we have access to all the state museums and historical culture. One of my favorites is the IMAX Theatre. It has one of the largest screens (70ft) in this region. I have enjoyed watching 3D movies here. NCSU offers an abundance of sports and recreation activities on and off campus. Also, Raleigh has local State Parks for hiking, biking, fishing and just enjoying the outdoors. There is always something to do in Raleigh, NC.

3 College Freshman

Athletics: NC State athletics are widely known, being in the ACC. The student involvement is huge and Wolfpack fans are known to be the most spirited and wild. It's entertaining going to football and basketball games watching both the team and the crowd. The team performance is better than most but could definitely improve which is why the grade is lower than an A. The facilities are great and clean, and the venues are large. State puts a lot of money into the athletics and it can definitely be seen.

4 College Freshman

Majors: To get into my biology major, you have to have a GPA of 2.8, which is higher than some of the other majors in the college of agriculture and life sciences. So there is that first. They look at chemistry 101 grades and calculus and biology as well, to see if you learn well. Involvement in extracurriculars isnt super important when applying for the program, but after you get in it is expected that you do have extracurriculars so be ready. The application process is super normal. Just CODA into it. No essay.

4 College Freshman

Majors: Biology is such a huge major but when you get into the different specific classes, the class size is small and professors are willing to spend extra time with students. All the faculty and professors are willing to help students when they need information on the degree program or on internships or undergraduate research opportunities. The career center is also very helpful and most students can find an internship.

4 College Freshman

Transportation: Transportation is great. The bus system has a large radius and has several buses that leads to various locations. It is free to students as well as the public. I am nor sure about long distance transportation.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Overall, the students' experience with NCSU is that it provides them with a rich learning environment. Students learn to balance play and work. Some come to NC State because of family tradition, to get away from the cold, or because of the College of Engineering-but whatever the reason is for the individual, positive feedback always finds its way out. Professors at the University will go above and beyond their call of duty. You make lifelong friends, and you have a huge list of organizations to partake in. Whether you're involved in a college sport, student government, or the Agribusiness Club, you will find your niche here among the thousands of students. Some professors will take you under their wing, and you will learn enormous amounts of information from them. These professors will also become lifelong connections who will probably end up writing letters of recommendation for you when it is time for you to find a job.

NC State wants its students to succeed not only in academics, but in life, too. Here you learn important lifelong skills that are essential to your survival in the real world. Classes can be rigorous and stressful, but students find a way to overcome hardships and get through. Professors will push you to do your best, but at the same time, they understand what it was like to be a student. NC State will help you become an expert in your subject of choice, and with the large number of students, you will come out of college ready to work in some of the most diverse settings.
