As a whole, Norfolk State University is not a strict campus. There is no curfew or anything of that nature. However, Norfolk State does set rules regarding attendance to classes that can result in students failing a course if too many days are missed. For each course, a minimum of 20 percent is allowed to be missed in unexcused absences. It is best to attend classes and avoid being lazy before an “F” is given for the semester.

As far as visitation rules go, the Office of Residence Life and Housing administers these policies. Depending on the academic standing and behavior of students, hours and rules differ. The drug and alcohol policy on campus is enforced; penalties result in fines and sometimes suspension or expulsion. RAs and GAs (graduate assistants) are pretty lenient if students follow rules and are responsible, respectable, and mature. After all, it is college, and they are not there to babysit. As far as hall coordinators and night staff (those at the front desk after midnight), they take their jobs seriously, making sure students abide by all rules in order to stay safe. Overall, the atmosphere is open and does not have a bunch of rules that lessen the campus experience.
