Transportation: There's NYU buses going around, plus the metro. Dorms are all near NYU buildings, and it's nice to just walk to class. Metro is dirty and disgusting though.

Drug Safety: only been here for like 2 months and I already know so many people doing drugs in almost every dorm.

4 College Freshman

Campus Quality: There are great buildings that are recently renovated and seem very new.

1 College Freshman

Parking: There are minimal parking spaces. Most are in public garages that you have to pay a large sum of money to keep your car there for.

4 College Freshman

Campus Quality: The facilities at NYU are very up-to-date. All the dining halls are very well maintained and new, as well as the freshman dorms. The dorms themselves are very large for city dorms, which is a great plus. Some academic buildings are a little rusty, especially Silver. But other than that, the buildings are all pretty new.

4 College Senior

Academics: I'm studying Film Scoring, and this is one of the only 3 schools in the country that offers this Graduate program.

Weather: It's freezing in the Winter, and hot during the Summer.

Health & Safety: They have really good to me, they see me without too much wait

Technology: The computer lab is very well equiped, the connection fails at times.

Campus Quality: The University Library is very extense. NYU downtown location puts it in the middle of lots of things to do and see in music, art, academia and many others.

Campus Food: Really good Palladian, Hayden and Kimmel are the best.

Administration: Super lenient from NYU security. From the police in New York, thats a whole other story.

1 College Freshman

Scholarships: NYU is so stingy about money. You really cannot count on getting any sort of grant- you're really lucky if you do.

Party Scene: Nightlife is absolutely for 21+ students or those students that have made the smart investment in fake IDs. Even then sometimes it can be costly because you most likely have to pay for cover and alcohol. Cover is usually higher for guys. If your under 21 you usually have to work to find a party or be careful about drinking in dorms. There is plenty of stuff to do at night that involves not partying though. There are comedy clubs and movie theaters and play houses everywhere.

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: There is Greek life at NYU but unlike at other schools it is not the driving force behind most students social lives. There is no housing for underclassmen and when you can move in, it is only to a penthouse in one of the upper class men dorms located quite a ways from campus.

Local Area: New York is a really big city and there is usually something to do. There is great shopping very close to us and great public transportation can take you uptown towards Museum Mile and Central Park. Despite what you have heard New York is actually relatively safe. I feel safe most of the time, especially on transit. The only thing is New York can get kind of lonely so be prepared.

3 College Freshman

Academics: I'm in the Liberal Studies Program in London and it's wonderful. All my professors are really knowledgeable and helpful. The class sizes are small enough to participate and for the professor to know your name. My only issue is the amount of work. There's always some essay due and it's not always returned, graded by the next class. It's annoying but definitely not horrible.

Off-Campus Housing: Real estate in NYC is very expensive and a challenging process. the amount you pay for rent and the amount you get for space is not proportional; however, for a certain amount of time, it might be worth it to experience living in NyC

Diversity: NYU is very diverse considering its location; however depending on the school you attend/program, it might be slightly diverse than what you would expect.

3 Recent Alumnus

Technology: Sometimes there are only a few available computers for printing. Also the connection to log on to the computer takes 5minutes which is very slow.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: I'm an Anthropology major and the professors in this department are great! Lots of them have a ton of fieldwork and research experience in their various areas and are all very enthusiastic about teaching and supporting the students. The really do enjoy you coming into office hours for any conversation. The workload isn't too bad, a lot of writing, but if you enjoy the subject it is a fun assignment.

1 College Sophomore

Parking: No one drives at NYU. Public transportation is much easier in the city so Parking is not an issue that is on the admins minds.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: Seeing as this is New York City, the housing turnover is extremely fast, and new places to rent are constantly going on the market. That being said there are a ton of choices, however, one really needs to be educated on the process to get a good deal. Broker fees can get expensive, and living really close to campus can also hike up costs. If you do your research and look ahead of time, however, off campus housing and freedom that comes with it can be rewarding.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: The freshman dorms have a great community and usually amazing RAs. The upperclassmen dorms all are apartment style, which is great, however, they tend to get nicer the further you are from campus. Also, because it is in New York City, dorming, and off campus housing also, are very expensive.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

NYU offers students a taste of the hustle and bustle they will most likely encounter in the real world once they graduate. It is an overpopulated institution, so you have to be ready to fight to gain certain academic opportunities, but cultivating such a habit may serve as indirect training for new graduates when they have to go about securing jobs in their respective fields. Life at NYU demands a certain kind of disposition; thus, it is not for everyone. For students who love NYC and the challenge and experience it offers, it is an exciting and ever-changing community. For those who desire a community-rich college experience, NYU is lacking in that area. However, you can make an amazing experience out of what the school does offer. Whatever your choice, get ready for a mix of demanding academics and wild experiences in the city. Finding a balance between the two is key at this big-city school.

Many students claim that the best part about attending NYU is living in New York City, while other students complain about the school's large tuition. Most often, students are dissatisfied with the lack of a campus or school spirit, and many students believe that the institution is run too much like a business, with the school using millions of dollars to make NYU a global institution instead of supporting its current students. Otherwise, most students appreciate the various benefits of living in the city, such as diverse and exciting nightlife options, a broad range of cuisines, and prestigious and diverse internship opportunities.
