Party Scene: You can do anything but probably need a good fake ID for bars/clubs and such or be over 21.

2 College Junior

Campus Housing: Housing is cool because it lets you experience a lot of different kinds of people, but it also depends on who is in your dorm and what kind of atmosphere it has, because each dorm is slightly different and has its own feel to it.

4 College Junior

Guys & Girls: There are a lot of hot girls but they're also stuck up if they know they're hot. But there are also a lot of cool girls who are into things that are different from the norm which makes them more interesting and unique.

Overall Experience: You get an opportunity to live in the city, where, if you're willing, you can find an experience that surpasses the regular college experience. You can explore anything you really want to. However, this all depends on how independent of a person you are. Even still, there are lots of school activities that you can attend. Parties are mostly held in apartments and so you kind of have to be in the know for them. Most people like to go to bars/shows.

Party Scene: Again, it's Manhattan, there is always something happening if you just go out and look for it. The variety is endless.

Campus Housing: I am a resident Assistant, so I am biased when it comes to housing. I love NYU resident life, but that is also because I choose and make an effort to get involved. Thats a theme throughout the university. Your experience is what you make it.

Administration: NYU is strict about some things and lenient about others. They are very concerned with student safety and well being.

Diversity: if there is one thing that NYU is KNOWN for, it's the diversity of its students and faculty. We are proud to be a "Global Network University" that is "In and of New York City, and in and of the World".

Athletics: NYU DOES have athletics, but they are not very recognized and are in no way a focus of the school. NYU took a deliberate step towards focusing on Academics in the mid 1980's and have stuck by that decision thus far.

Majors: You apply directly to your NYU school/major, just like a normal college app, and depending on your chosen major, you either turn in a portfolio, writing sample, audition, etc that will help the admissions team make a decision.

Majors: There is almost every major offered at NYU, and if you can't find one that suits you, you can go to NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized study, where you literally create YOUR OWN major (called a concentration), and plan your own curriculum.

Campus Food: There are around 12 dining halls/on campus eateries at NYU, a much larger number than most other universities, and the variety of foods is just as abundant.

2 College Junior

Scholarships: NYU is known for doing very poorly in the financial aid department, and that is definitely the #1 worry for students at the school. NYU is very expensive and there is not nearly enough financial aid available for its students.

Weather: I personally HATE the cold, and in the winter, New York gets COLD, at least for my standard (originally from Miami). So the Weather does affect my mood.

Local Area: It's New York City... Manhattan specifically. I think that speaks for itself.

3 College Junior

Guys & Girls: NYU is not exactly "find a mate" central, but I guess as they say "seek and you shall find". its all about having an open mind.

Campus Quality: NYU is a state of the art school with tons of facilities that cater to any and all student needs.

Off-Campus Dining: Since NYU is in manhattan, there is an endless variety of foods to eat for every taste and dietary need.

Off-Campus Dining: You are in New York City. There is everything, anything, you could possibly want. There's 1$ pizza, there's fast food, there's sushi, there's upscale seafood, there's theme restaurants... I could go on. Basically, if you want it, you can find it. Right around Washington Square Park there is a good selection of cheaper caf├ęs and smaller scale restaurants, and of course the village is the best place to brunch!

Scholarships: NYU is famously stingy. There are very few merit scholarships available to students, and they are quite competitive. That said, they are available, and I have gotten one as have a couple other people. More interestingly, there is money to be had, and depending on the program you are in, there are grants and fellowships that provide funding for certain things.

Local Area: NYU is located in what most people consider the coolest part of New York City - which is made so in part by the huge numbers of students in the area. Even so, students blend in seamlessly with tourists, residents, visitors etc. There is always something happening, and Washington Square Park is prime people-watching.

Campus Quality: Most of the facilities at NYU are really fantastic and modern. Of course, there are some buildings/labs/spaces that aren't quite as up to snuff, but in general everything is in working condition, and more than that, nice. There are computer labs in many buildings, although printing is more limited (only available in some of the bigger buildings). The gyms are really nice too!

Health & Safety: I feel ultra safe while on campus. I always see security walking around the neighborhood at all times. I have not seen any crimes in the area either. Everyone is so nice and polite. They even have special security measures. If you personally don't feel safe, they will drive you home. How great is that!

Majors: I love my program for School Counseling. The professors are so welcoming and friendly and want to help you achieve the best that you can. They have an extra bilingual section as well. I find this to be a great advantage especially for those looking to work in areas with great diversity like New York. They provide great resources and career hunting. Before I started at NYU they had me look into jobs that are of my interest. I was employed the week before classes started. I have no doubt that it will be easy to find a job in my field after I graduate.

Party Scene: Night life is great at NYU. There is always something to do for all ages, even if you are under 18. There are so many events and great places to visit. In the center of NYU there is a park that people play music sometimes or entertain others with their magic tricks or other outstanding talents like dancing and teaching others.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

NYU offers students a taste of the hustle and bustle they will most likely encounter in the real world once they graduate. It is an overpopulated institution, so you have to be ready to fight to gain certain academic opportunities, but cultivating such a habit may serve as indirect training for new graduates when they have to go about securing jobs in their respective fields. Life at NYU demands a certain kind of disposition; thus, it is not for everyone. For students who love NYC and the challenge and experience it offers, it is an exciting and ever-changing community. For those who desire a community-rich college experience, NYU is lacking in that area. However, you can make an amazing experience out of what the school does offer. Whatever your choice, get ready for a mix of demanding academics and wild experiences in the city. Finding a balance between the two is key at this big-city school.

Many students claim that the best part about attending NYU is living in New York City, while other students complain about the school's large tuition. Most often, students are dissatisfied with the lack of a campus or school spirit, and many students believe that the institution is run too much like a business, with the school using millions of dollars to make NYU a global institution instead of supporting its current students. Otherwise, most students appreciate the various benefits of living in the city, such as diverse and exciting nightlife options, a broad range of cuisines, and prestigious and diverse internship opportunities.
