Academics: most courses are taught by tenured professors and the adjuncts are top notch. the work load is heavy, but doable. there are lots of people along the way that will help you register. you are never alone or abandoned at NYU!

Health & Safety: there is security all over the place and people are helpful when there are problems.

Diversity: There could be more diversity in relation to native americans and african americans.

Guys & Girls: The guys and girls are great, very driven and enthusiastic about life and what they are learning. Everyone here is inspirational you will find a mix from students who already own their own company to those who are the first in their family to graduate. Everyone assumes that majority of the guys at NYU are gay but you would be surprised that many actually aren't of course in certain departments and schools you will find more than others but if you looking for a straight guy they're there and smart and gorgeous. NYU prides itself on being diverse, but it is still lacking a large population of minorities.

Scholarships: Best thing to do is visit the office of financial aid, and stay on top of your paper work.

Off-Campus Dining: There is so much great food to get off-campus and if you know how to look you can find amazing deals. A dinner can cost about 10 dollars, which is bad by NYC standards. If you are in the mood for some kind of food chances are you can find it and fairly close to you.

Technology: Computers are easily available, but many teaches set the same due dates so at times it can be hard to get one and print work. Just going a little earlier solves this problem, so it isn't terrible.

Majors: I'm in the College of Arts and Science (CAS) and as a person who applied to NYU undecided, I am very pleased with how much I've grown and experienced during my first semester here. Every CAS student has to complete the core curriculum within the four years of studying at NYU but the curriculum is not as terrifying as it sounds since each requirement offers a variety of courses that you can choose from to satisfy the requirement. Thus, you're not limited to only a handful of courses that do not interest you. Additionally, I do not have to declare my major until the end of my sophomore year so that gives me a lot of leeway to take courses that will allow me to explore different career paths. Speaking from my experience with professors, they are all very knowledgable and well read in their field of study and are easily accessible through email or appointments should you have any questions on course material. Internship and job opportunities vary depending on what you're studying and can be found through a different department at NYU.

Local Area: NYU is located at the heart of New York City and many people say that it's the greatest city on Earth. NYU's campus is surrounded by the world's best art exhibits, theatres, museums and financial institutions, which offer a plethora of internship opportunities. Additionally, no matter what you're craving, you'll be able to find it in NYC. With its diverse and multicultural geography, what you should be worrying about is gaining that freshmen 15. You can find shopping throughout the entire borough of Manhattan, from Times Square to SoHo or you can take a train to one of the close by malls. You will never be bored at NYU and if you are, you're doing something wrong.

Athletics: NYU is not a university that is big on sports. Even though there are several varsity sports teams, they're very low-key and not a lot of people join them. Additionally, although students could attend games and meets, most students generally don't go to them. However, the athletic facilities are open to all the students and include top notch exercising equipment, including two swimming pools and basketball courts.

Off-Campus Housing: NYU does not provide off campus housing, but they do have a service available to students that they can use to find apartments in the city or people looking for roommates. However, they are very expensive and finding roommates is highly recommended.

Transportation: Free buses are provided from campus to all the dorms. It has its positives and negatives, depending on where you need to go. The buses leave campus every 10-20 minutes.

Party Scene: Because the school is in New York city, there aren't many college age clubs to go to, but there are a lot of concert venues near campus that have 18+ shows. Many students will throw their own parties from time to time and campus provides late night transportation to get you back to your dorm.

Drug Safety: There aren't a lot of drugs visible on campus, but it depends on the crowd you associate with.

Guys & Girls: Most of the guys at NYU are either gay or stuck-up or already in a relationship. It's hard to find a one that's single and straight.

Scholarships: I received a decent amount of financial aid from NYU and all I really had to do was fill out FAFSA. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough and I had to take the rest out in loans.

Athletics: I really hear nothing about sports. The athletic community focuses only on other athletes and the sporting events aren't advertised much. I never know when there's a game or anything.

Off-Campus Dining: The options in Hayden were great. Many vegan options made it easy for me to find something to eat!

Campus Quality: Honestly I wish it was more commuter student friendly. I feel like the school has a lot to offer but it doesnt reach the commuter students.

Campus Food: I found a lot of great off-campus places to eat. I have not had a lot of experience with on campus dining.

Campus Quality: I wish there was more of a campus, but otherwise I like it so far.

Off-Campus Housing: There are a lot of apartments in NYC. But they are EXPENSIVE and SMALL. NYU offers its own apartment housing that is nicer than anything you would get for the same cost of off campus housing in the area.

Transportation: There is a free shuttle that any student can call at any time to come and pick them up at night. I haven't used it personally. But everyone knows about it and appreciates the fact that its there.

Administration: The RA's (Residential Assistances) for the most part are jokes when it comes to strictness. You can basically get away with anything in a dorm, as long as your RA doesn't have it in for you. Even if you're caught it's most likely you'll have a blind eye turned to you or receive a verbal warning, although if you mess with the wrong RA you might receive a summons with the administrator.

The campus security are harmless, as long as you remember your ID and remain respectful. It can be really annoying, though, if you're late for class and forgot your ID, as most security guards will not allow you into a building without it. The only seemingly serious rule that is enforced is if you throw anything out a window, you will be automatically expelled from housing without question for liability purposes.

Guys & Girls: In terms of the student body at NYU, there is a diverse mix of social groups but the demographics reflect mostly those who can afford to attend the school. People are dressed generally well, either in a hipster-esque look or preppy, and sweats aren't really socially acceptable. Although some students may be interested in sports, our school isn't really renown for sports, as any given student is more likely to be interested in politics or finance. You can find any social niche in NYU though since the student body is so large.

What I've noticed NYU students find strange about NYU students is we generally not only go to school, but also commonly work a full work week or hold an internship. Monday through Thursdays are generally packed with studies and work and do not permit time for mid-week parties; however, Thursday begins the weekend and you can never say you can't find a good party in the City.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

NYU offers students a taste of the hustle and bustle they will most likely encounter in the real world once they graduate. It is an overpopulated institution, so you have to be ready to fight to gain certain academic opportunities, but cultivating such a habit may serve as indirect training for new graduates when they have to go about securing jobs in their respective fields. Life at NYU demands a certain kind of disposition; thus, it is not for everyone. For students who love NYC and the challenge and experience it offers, it is an exciting and ever-changing community. For those who desire a community-rich college experience, NYU is lacking in that area. However, you can make an amazing experience out of what the school does offer. Whatever your choice, get ready for a mix of demanding academics and wild experiences in the city. Finding a balance between the two is key at this big-city school.

Many students claim that the best part about attending NYU is living in New York City, while other students complain about the school's large tuition. Most often, students are dissatisfied with the lack of a campus or school spirit, and many students believe that the institution is run too much like a business, with the school using millions of dollars to make NYU a global institution instead of supporting its current students. Otherwise, most students appreciate the various benefits of living in the city, such as diverse and exciting nightlife options, a broad range of cuisines, and prestigious and diverse internship opportunities.
