Athletics: NYU has sports, but we're certainly not known as a huge sports school. (Our team name is the Violets. Really.) High school athletes will find teams they can join to keep it going -- those who do sports are definitely passionate. Still, people don't really go to sports events unless you're participating or know someone on the team.

Party Scene: Because NYU is in the city of Manhattan located in the village the nightlife is excellent.

4 College Junior

Transportation: Public tyransportation is really good inNYC with subways, busses and NYU has its own busses for its students to and from campus to dorms.

Campus Food: THE FOOD IS SO GOOD! Some dining halls are amazing, while some are the typical food. But there's this one dining hall that has a sushi chef make fresh sushi for you. Just wow.

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: People take drugs. My friends don't, but there's always a crowd somewhere

Off-Campus Housing: New York City is just expensive. If you live off-campus, you're most likely gonna end up in Brooklyn, which is a 30 minutes train ride to campus

1 College Sophomore

Scholarships: I received some financial aid, but not as much as NYU had hinted they would give to a student like me. Some people received none. NYU is the most expensive university in America. They could give more financial aid

5 College Senior

Academics: Using the grading curve, an A+ will mean some in top 10% of the class.

Local Area: The people, especially around Washington Square Park, are all eclectic and interesting. There is constantly something happening around campus, whether it be a party, charity event, or a play/musical. The shopping is also great.

Off-Campus Housing: Despite the high prices of off campus housing, it is sometimes more affordable than living on campus.

Technology: The Mac desktop computers are easily accessible and always functioning.

Guys & Girls: You'll find all kinds of people in NYU. It is a diverse campus and emphasizes global awareness from everyone. You will find yourself several hipsters, but among them you will find regular people as well.

Parking: There is virtually no parking in NYU. Basically if you need to park your car, you'll need to pay an expensive ticket in one of the garages. Your best be would be to use local transportation so you won't have to worry about parking all too much.

Local Area: New York is the a fantastic city with several different activities to offer. There is definitely something for everyone who comes here. There is always something interesting going on throughout the week and especially during the weekend. It's not surprising because the city sees so many cultures and talents around here. People are generally very nice but you should definitely know when to keep to yourself. Otherwise, New York is the place to be.

Academics: Professors typically have a lot of expertise and great knowledge of subject matter but don't always take teaching very seriously. Classes can be hit or miss - good information is found amid much unnecessary chatter. Workload is light to average. Registration process is easy.

Academics: You definitely get access to experts but the classes can be almost too easy and shallow at times. Workload is average. Lots of great internship/job opportunities though.

Diversity: Very diverse in terms of cultural background but less diverse with regard to political views/religious beliefs.

4 College Sophomore

Scholarships: I haven't revived my financial aid package yet but I have called the office with questions and I have received extremely detailed help.

Party Scene: I can only stat that they are available however I haven't really attended any.

5 College Sophomore

Campus Quality: There is a variety is student activities both on and off campus. These activities are advertised everywhere. Unfortunately I am unable to attend many of them because I am a single mother working full time and attending school part time.

3 College Senior

Technology: There are numerous computers, but because many students use them, there is sometimes a bit of a wait.

4 College Senior

Majors: My program is interdisciplinary and gives lots of freedom with course selection. The amount of reading can be intense, but that's the life of an English major.

4 College Senior

Majors: Since you're in NY, the possibilities for interning are endless. I'm in publishing internships right now, and I've made some great connections.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

NYU offers students a taste of the hustle and bustle they will most likely encounter in the real world once they graduate. It is an overpopulated institution, so you have to be ready to fight to gain certain academic opportunities, but cultivating such a habit may serve as indirect training for new graduates when they have to go about securing jobs in their respective fields. Life at NYU demands a certain kind of disposition; thus, it is not for everyone. For students who love NYC and the challenge and experience it offers, it is an exciting and ever-changing community. For those who desire a community-rich college experience, NYU is lacking in that area. However, you can make an amazing experience out of what the school does offer. Whatever your choice, get ready for a mix of demanding academics and wild experiences in the city. Finding a balance between the two is key at this big-city school.

Many students claim that the best part about attending NYU is living in New York City, while other students complain about the school's large tuition. Most often, students are dissatisfied with the lack of a campus or school spirit, and many students believe that the institution is run too much like a business, with the school using millions of dollars to make NYU a global institution instead of supporting its current students. Otherwise, most students appreciate the various benefits of living in the city, such as diverse and exciting nightlife options, a broad range of cuisines, and prestigious and diverse internship opportunities.
