Campus Quality: Tisch School of the Arts is highly respected amongst all professionals in the entertainment business around the world. It's known for its rigorous program, allowing students to fully engage in a conservative training program 3 full days a week while supplementing them with academic coursework to further their knowledge on the world around them the other 2 days. Faculty are very open and generous with their students.

Transportation: Different NYU buses go different routes throughout the city and campus, and it is always very convenient to catch a cab or take a subway.

Overall Experience: I love my school, as it has one of the best drama programs in the world. It was my first and only choice.

Health & Safety: Security guards at every dorm and NYU building, as well as card swipes to ensure that the person entering any NYU building is a student or faculty member.

Technology: Very good computers and labs, however, there is no computer lab at the farthest dorm and printing is very expensive as students only get a certain amount of pages for free.

Greek Life: Greek Life isn't really important at NYU. While it exists, and there are definitely frat parties and it does matter to those who are a part of Greek Life, it has very little effect on the social scene as a whole.

Drug Safety: Because NYU is not housed within a campus, policing drug and alcohol use is difficult. Most students don't use substances within their dorms, and when they do, they are often not caught. Accessibility to alcohol and other substances within the city is notoriously easy.

Academics: NYU is broken down very specifically into schools -- Stern, the business school, College of Arts and Sciences, Tisch School of the Arts, etc. I am currently studying Journalism in CAS, and it's been an amazing experience. While AP classes have been a difficulty to get credit for, I have been able to take classes I am interested in. I am challenged, but not beyond my ability. While the work is definitely hard, it is enjoyable and rewarding.

Academics: NYU has some of the best faculty and professors in the world. The reputation for an amazing education is absolutely upheld, but it is still tailored to individual students and their passions and majors.

Overall Experience: While college is different for everyone, NYU is perfect for me. I love the city, the way the school is run, the work I have done there, the things I have learned, the places I have seen, the people I have met, and if I could do it all over again, I wouldn't do a single thing different.

Local Area: It doesn't get any better than New York City. Going to college in the world's greatest city makes for constant excitement and so many incredible things to do.

Campus Quality: While NYU is expensive, you absolutely get what you pay for. The buildings, facilities, and libraries are truly beautiful. At the center of campus is Washington Square Park, a beautiful hang-out with a history of musicians and artists, and the famous Washington Square arch and fountain. There are also many coffee shops that students love, as well easy accessibility to the city as a whole.

Campus Quality: NYU is one of the most unique schools in the country. The school is located in downtown Manhattan, NYC. The academic programs are incredible, and because of the location of the school, jobs and internships are also widely-available and very prestigious. To be in the center of the greatest city in the world makes for one of the most unique and different university experiences, and personally, I'd have to say it's also the best university experience I could have had.

Technology: While computer labs are often very full, the turnover is quick. Most students have their own laptops and use the labs to print out papers for class. All NYU buildings have wifi, which is quick and reliable. While a personal computer wouldn't be absolutely necessary, it would be difficult without one.

5 College Freshman

Transportation: I don't think I know a single student with a car at NYU, because we all have access to safe-ride provided by NYU, and then the incredible public transportation of NYC. Most importantly, however, the entire city, especially the area of the school, is 100% walkable.

5 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: There is nowhere else in the entire world with more variety in dining than NYC. Whether late at night, early in the morning, a nice dinner, or just some good coffee, there's everything, and it can be brought to you or you can go out and easily get food yourself.

Scholarships: The financial aid process at NYU is difficult. For me, while my family is upper-middle class, and could, by the books afford my schooling, my father also has three other children to support, retirement to save for, and also didn't want to just hand me any and all money I needed. Unfortunately, financial aid at NYU is almost completely need-based (based on the FAFSA) and not at all merit-based, and receiving any financial aid has been very difficult for me.

Athletics: While NYU has incredible work-out facilities, athletics are simply not important at the university. While there are athletic teams, they aren't backed by big crowds with enormous school spirit, instead it's more about creating a passion for the university with the incredible backdrop of New York City. For people like me, who don't really have a passion for sports or sporting events, there is nothing better.

Campus Housing: The dorms at NYU are really cool, mostly old buildings, though many are in a renovation process right now, which makes them incredibly nice and much more spacious. Most classes take a while to walk to, but it's nice, because New York City is amazing, and the walk is enjoyable, especially when the weather is nice. All dorms have private bathrooms and after freshman year, all have kitchens (freshman year only two dorm buildings have kitchen options). The social atmosphere is really special considering the location of the school, and either works for you or it doesn't. It's very different from other universities, but the opportunity to live in the city and make a life there is unbeatable. While NYU is incredibly expensive, it's truly an investment in your future.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

NYU offers students a taste of the hustle and bustle they will most likely encounter in the real world once they graduate. It is an overpopulated institution, so you have to be ready to fight to gain certain academic opportunities, but cultivating such a habit may serve as indirect training for new graduates when they have to go about securing jobs in their respective fields. Life at NYU demands a certain kind of disposition; thus, it is not for everyone. For students who love NYC and the challenge and experience it offers, it is an exciting and ever-changing community. For those who desire a community-rich college experience, NYU is lacking in that area. However, you can make an amazing experience out of what the school does offer. Whatever your choice, get ready for a mix of demanding academics and wild experiences in the city. Finding a balance between the two is key at this big-city school.

Many students claim that the best part about attending NYU is living in New York City, while other students complain about the school's large tuition. Most often, students are dissatisfied with the lack of a campus or school spirit, and many students believe that the institution is run too much like a business, with the school using millions of dollars to make NYU a global institution instead of supporting its current students. Otherwise, most students appreciate the various benefits of living in the city, such as diverse and exciting nightlife options, a broad range of cuisines, and prestigious and diverse internship opportunities.
