College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: I have not looked into off-campus housing very much.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Quality: Most of the buildings have places to sit besides the classrooms and there are computers and printers in some buildings as well. The campus is situated around Washington Square Park which is a nice place to be during the not cold months.

Campus Quality: There are lots of activities that students can choose to participate in, and there are two athletic facilities with lots of equipment and space.

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: NYU Public Safety is excellent in helping students. They are available on campus 24 hours a day so there is never a problem getting to and from your dorm to campus.

4 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Drug safety at NYU is great. There is little peer pressure to engage in drugs. Resident assistants are usually vigilant in attempting to prevent drugs from coming into the dorms.

4 College Sophomore

Party Scene: Given the surrounding City, there are a vast variety of nightlife options near NYU. Many places are open throughout the week, making it very easy.

Greek Life: Greek Life at NYU is relatively minimal. There are no fraternity houses because of the City, so social life is rarely dictated or related to fraternity events.

4 College Sophomore

Diversity: There is an extremely large number of international students, making NYU's diversity great. NYU is one of the most liberal schools, so there is also a wide variety of diversity regarding sexuality.

3 College Sophomore

Weather: The cold in the wintertime can be difficult because the streets are extremely slippery. In the summer, the extreme heat can be tough to handle because some dorms do not have air conditioning

1 College Sophomore

Parking: Parking in New York City is extremely expensive, and there are large fines for expired passes. The necessity for a car on campus is zero.

Weather: I use it to determine to go to class

Campus Quality: It would be better if less students were commuters.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: Most students opt for off campus housing after sophomore year because of how NYU's housing lottery works. Younger students get a better pick.

5 College Freshman

Diversity: School is extremely accepting and diverse. Large number of ethnic and sexual minorities.

3 College Freshman

Party Scene: Penthouse and apartment parties are thrown by a few fraternities or wealthy students. Clubs and bars play an expectedly huge social role in the city. Sometimes a fraternity or rich student will rent out a club or bar for a party. However, drink prices and cover charges add up to a huge number, so make sure to pregame. Fake IDs are necessary for going out, but are abundant and easy to find due to their high demand.

Greek Life: Though NYU is not usually seen as a greek school, greek life has a much larger social presence than one would expect. It also provides the feel of a more tight-knit community that accompanies most smaller colleges.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

NYU offers students a taste of the hustle and bustle they will most likely encounter in the real world once they graduate. It is an overpopulated institution, so you have to be ready to fight to gain certain academic opportunities, but cultivating such a habit may serve as indirect training for new graduates when they have to go about securing jobs in their respective fields. Life at NYU demands a certain kind of disposition; thus, it is not for everyone. For students who love NYC and the challenge and experience it offers, it is an exciting and ever-changing community. For those who desire a community-rich college experience, NYU is lacking in that area. However, you can make an amazing experience out of what the school does offer. Whatever your choice, get ready for a mix of demanding academics and wild experiences in the city. Finding a balance between the two is key at this big-city school.

Many students claim that the best part about attending NYU is living in New York City, while other students complain about the school's large tuition. Most often, students are dissatisfied with the lack of a campus or school spirit, and many students believe that the institution is run too much like a business, with the school using millions of dollars to make NYU a global institution instead of supporting its current students. Otherwise, most students appreciate the various benefits of living in the city, such as diverse and exciting nightlife options, a broad range of cuisines, and prestigious and diverse internship opportunities.
