Transportation: Because of the urban environment there is no possibly way to keep a car in the city. However, public transit options are widespread and very convenient for the average student. Also, NYU has it's own buses which travel to the farther residence halls and are very convenient.

Athletics: NYU doesn't have the traditional sport atmosphere of a state school. For example, there is no football and sports are almost never talked about. However, if you are interested in a certain sport there a lot of opportunities to get involved and watch the games, and we also have a lot of really unique sports like fencing which we are good at. Also, there are a lot of sports clubs here that offer tons of unique sports.

3 College Sophomore

Weather: They have a regular four seasons which can be annoying only because you have to walk everywhere! So winter seems a lot colder than what I'm used to. But it is also quite beautiful, and there is nothing quite like experiencing all the seasons in New York City.

3 College Senior

Weather: Very windy so expect to break 2-3 umbrellas each year. Unless you purchase the strong ones.

4 College Senior

Party Scene: NYU is all about the night life.
In fact, the actual life begins after 12am.
There are various parties to go to, both bars and dorms.

3 College Senior

Drug Safety: Most dorms have drug use and some sort of drug deal going on.
It's not the worst but it is definitely not a good scene.

Technology: All the computers have the latest Intel Processors
and availability to latest Macbooks as well.

Greek Life: Greek life is definitely present and if you choose to get involved, you can get an involved as you want to be. I know guys who do nothing but frat stuff but I also know brothers who are in but don't go to anything. Its there if you want it.

Parking: There's absolutely no reason to even have a car in New York city, and NYU doesn't make any effort to have parking for it's students.

Local Area: New York City is the best city in the world. There are so many different things to do, from art, to music, to partying, to restaurants and shows.

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: I would say that alcohol is a large part of college life, particularly if you're over 21, but nobody peer pressures you or makes you feel bad if you don't drink.

Scholarships: There is financial aid available, but most of it is geared towards getting loans. I have a deep seeded issue with loan companies and I'm still struggling to pay them off in this hyper-inflated low wage economy, and I would recommend getting as many scholarships as you can.

Also, look into Pell Grants. They are about $2000 at most, not nearly enough to cover the tuition at NYU, but if you have the drive write as many scholarship essays as possible to get your tuition funded.

I loved NYU so much that I'm looking at their graduate school program. However, I'm not looking to take out massive student loans again and am trying to find as many suitable scholarships to get me to school again to defer loans and to get my Master's.

Local Area: Most NYU schools & dorms are located around Washington Square Park. This means 3 things: 1. You are in the heart of NYC, but still in a relatively quiet place. 2. You have an amazing park nearby where you get to see little performances by artists everyday. 3. You are surrounded by students!
There are students from all over the world & everyone has an NYU spirit that bonds us together.
There's a sports center, lots of shopping places and number of eateries & restaurants within a mile from most schools!
You're in Manhattan..nothing better!

Drug Safety: Being a graduate school, alcohol is served at most social events here. Smoking is strictly prohibited in school buildings & so you see people smoking only outside (& since there is no school "campus" as such, restrictions can be imposed only inside the individual school buildings). No idea about undergraduate school activities.

Local Area: Its New York City! There is so much to do. You can take the subway to see the Statue of Liberty or The Empire State or go to a museum. There is always a party going on. Greenwich Village is full of shops and food. It is right next to Soho, so the shopping options are endless. Also, there are actually some nice parks like Washington Square Park. You can also catch a baseball game or go to a Broadway show or a musical. There is an endless number of things to do.

Campus Housing: I live in Third North which is supposed to be the best freshmen dorm on campus. It seems only mediocre to me. The room is dirty and the air conditioning seems to be broken. There is dust everywhere and there is mold growing on the air vents. The food is not that great either. There is a salad bar and pizza and hot food, but the food becomes boring and repetitive. If Third North is supposed to be the best freshman dorm, I cannot imagine how the other dorms are. But we do get a kitchen and a game and TV lounge which is nice.

Off-Campus Dining: The restaurants here are amazing and so diverse. Although most of the food is a bit on the expensive side, there are a vast number of options such as fast food places like Wendy's, McDonalds or Chipotle that offer cheap dining. There are also tons of food carts located close to classes so there is no chance that students will ever go hungry. What I love is the number of vegetarian and vegan options. Being a vegetarian myself, it is nice to know that if I forget to prepare my lunch or if I do not have the time, there are always dining options available for me.

5 College Freshman

Party Scene: There's tons of clubs and restaurants in Greenwich village. Sometimes they don't even check your id.

Parking: Cars are useless in New York City. There is no space to park.

Party Scene: Nightlife at NYU is very enjoyable and memorable. Students go out to outside clubs and have fun. But for those who drink, it is always good to drink responsibly to avoid trouble out there. Most clubs are tolerant to those who are 21 and over. Transportation back to the campus is convenient during reasonable hours.

Local Area: New York city is a very attractive city. It has many celebrities who are in the music industry, and this creates bliss to music lovers and those who wish to become musicians. Shopping is enjoyable mostly to the rich, because the cost of living in New York is very high. People in the New York communities value students because New York University is a very reputable university worldwide.

3 Recent Alumnus

Scholarships: The financial aid process is very stressful. It is difficult for international students to get financial aid. International students are not eligible for federal financial aid. I am yet to receive a considerable amount of financial aid.

Here are the tips to get financial aid:
- demonstrate the need for financial need
- excel in academic studies
- excel in sports activities

4 College Sophomore

Majors: There is a lot of help and support if you are pre-health.

4 College Sophomore

Weather: It's NYC...I personally don't mind the different weather.

Technology: There are definitely enough computer labs and the printing service is great.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

NYU offers students a taste of the hustle and bustle they will most likely encounter in the real world once they graduate. It is an overpopulated institution, so you have to be ready to fight to gain certain academic opportunities, but cultivating such a habit may serve as indirect training for new graduates when they have to go about securing jobs in their respective fields. Life at NYU demands a certain kind of disposition; thus, it is not for everyone. For students who love NYC and the challenge and experience it offers, it is an exciting and ever-changing community. For those who desire a community-rich college experience, NYU is lacking in that area. However, you can make an amazing experience out of what the school does offer. Whatever your choice, get ready for a mix of demanding academics and wild experiences in the city. Finding a balance between the two is key at this big-city school.

Many students claim that the best part about attending NYU is living in New York City, while other students complain about the school's large tuition. Most often, students are dissatisfied with the lack of a campus or school spirit, and many students believe that the institution is run too much like a business, with the school using millions of dollars to make NYU a global institution instead of supporting its current students. Otherwise, most students appreciate the various benefits of living in the city, such as diverse and exciting nightlife options, a broad range of cuisines, and prestigious and diverse internship opportunities.
