Off-Campus Housing

4 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: If you go to a purpose built apartment complex for students adjacent to campus called university center you will actually pay less per year than you would if you lived in on campus housing, however you wouldn't be able to get a meal plan so it's a choice.

Off-Campus Housing: I've heard from other students that it isn't so bad.

3 College Junior

Off-Campus Housing: There's the UC and there's Society Hill. I also know some students live in the Ironbound or in Kearney/Harrison, but to live there you'd definitely need a car.

3 College Senior

Off-Campus Housing: I dont leave in off campus building.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: You only get pointed in the right direction and after that, you're pretty much on your own when it coming to find housing off campus.

At NJIT, the only off-campus housing that can be considered safe is several miles away. This is because the area immediately surrounding NJIT is known for project housing and robberies; safer housing would be located far enough to avoid these areas. So if you decide to live off-campus in a secure area, there will be a slight commute to NJIT. If a student wishes to seek off-campus housing and doesn't want to live near a subway entrance, he or she is going to need a car.

Students sometimes do not even feel safe living in on-campus housing, so few dare to seek off-campus housing. However, if any off-campus housing is available, it is usually a short drive back to campus, so proximity is not a concern. It is also generally the same price as on-campus housing, depending on the housing unit.

Did You Know?
With four on-campus residences, housing scholarships, and a high local crime rate, it is rare to see an NJIT student living off campus. If more than one student lives off campus, it's a shock.
