Party Scene

{{ error }}
4 College Sophomore

Party Scene: I love the party scene at Mount Holyoke, mainly because there are 4 other colleges close by to party at so things never really get old. There are many options as long as you have the price range of about $10 you can gain access to any school event. Other parties such as dorm parties are usually free and you can get all the party favors you want, usually for free too.

3 College Freshman

Party Scene: You can find some great parties on campus every now and then. You can also go to the other four colleges to switch it up a bit and meet new people.

2 College Sophomore

Party Scene: I usually go off campus for frat parties and house parties because on campus people call campus police too often to break up a party (even during weekends).

1 College Senior

Party Scene: no social life on campus if you're not connect to a specific type of mount holyoke group ...

Don’t expect very much out of the nightlife here. Sure, there are parties, and there are bars and clubs in the area, but it is entirely possible to go through your four years here and never go to one. It seems that you have to choose between expensive, upscale breweries and sketchy bars, with almost nothing in between. You will find college students nearly everywhere, just because there are so many in the valley, but few places cater specifically to them.

However, you don’t have to settle for staying on campus and trying to enjoy yourself at a party where the guy to girl ratio is 50 to 1, nor do you have to go to some frat party at UMass. (Though, not all parties at UMass are bad, and if you go with a bunch of friends with the intent of making fun of it, even TAP, the notorious Amherst party, isn’t awful.) You might not be able to include alcohol in your evening, unless you just want to sit around a bar and grill or tavern for a few hours and then get kicked out at midnight, but you certainly can take advantage of the nightlife in Northampton, which centers on indie music. Pearl Street and the Iron Horse Music Hall are magnets for small-name artists, some of which are quite good and have diehard followings. There’s always Haven, the Goth club (held at Diva’s Nightclub), which provides a good occasion to dress up and dance—and it’s not just for hardcore Goths.

Organization Parties
There are lots of on-campus parties sponsored by various organizations throughout the year, from the more official themed parties that the College pays for, to the after-parties that take place after many of the cultural shows. The more official parties tend to be sparsely attended but loud, while the smaller organization parties often take place on the edges of campus or in a dorm, so that if you didn’t know, you wouldn’t be able to tell anything was going on. The on-campus party scene will likely be a disappointment to hardcore partiers, so it’s recommended that you try UMass or Amherst, whose parties are probably the best thing you’ll find around here.

Club ListingsWhat's This?

Pearl Street NightClub

Lots and lots of music entertainment happens here; mostly smaller names though.

10 Pearl St.

(413) 584-7771

Called "Western New England's premier nightclub," this place caters to college students with such events as "Ultimate College Night" and under-21 dance parties.

1708 Main St.

(413) 787-0600

Diva's Nightclub

Diva's is perhaps most popular for Haven, the Goth nightclub event that happens here every Tuesday night.

492 Pleasant St.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Monkey Bar & Grill

The bar here is supposedly sketchy, but if you want some "interesting" people-watching, try it. Just make sure you go with a friend.

63 N. Pleasant St.

(413) 259-1600

Northampton Brewery

This is an upscale place, complete with candles on the table. It's a place to be a connoisseur of beer, not a place to get drunk. Although, the beer tends to only get average reviews.

11 Brewster Ct.

(413) 584-9903

Moan & Dove

This place has great beer, though a bit on the expensive side. Although it doesn't cater specifically to college students, it has a friendly atmosphere.

460 West Street

(413) 256-1710

Fedora's Tavern

Both the restaurant and the bar are popular among MHC students, owing largely to their location right across the street from campus. However, it isn't a late-night kind of place, as the bar, which closes half an hour later than the restaurant, which always closes before midnight.

23 College St.

South Hadley

(413) 534-8222

McMurphy's Uptown Tavern

A popular place to go for lots of MHC students. Not quite as upscale as some other area places.

37 N. Pleasant St.

(413) 253-0170

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Iron Horse Music Hall

This venue has a club-like atmosphere, although it's not strictly a club. It's primarily a place to see indie music artists.
