Health & Safety: campus security are always present

Guys & Girls: Everyone is just like any typical private college.

5 College Junior

Academics: The Outdoor Education department is awesome. I have many opportunities to shadow, experience, and intern in the many different fields in outdoor education.

Academics: As far as I know there are a lot of options at the school. Being a very small student body helps to enhance the student professor relationships.

Overall Experience: This school is a very small and quiet school with a wonderful group of students and faculty. The personal relationships that the school promotes is outstanding. It has been great to go to a school that is not afraid to include Christianity and religion into the Educative experience. I am very pleased with the education that I have received this far, and will continue to attend this school until I complete my degree or until I have reached the level of education i am seeking.

Diversity: Montreat is a private Christian college but not everyone there is Christian. The school has a lot of international students as well as student from all over the US. Most of the students are accepting of others I am not really aware of the LGBT community but I am sure it is present. The cultural diversity is pretty obvious. There is a lot of different ethnicity and race diversity within the student body.

Off-Campus Dining: Some of the local places have great food. The restaurants that offer student discounts are not really advertising it but are there if you ask. overall cost is about average some are higher and some are lower. There are not too many fast food places and they are not very good.

Parking: If you come to class early or live on campus finding a place to park is not too difficult. There are peak times when parking is a little hard to find but overall the parking is not bad and the location to classes is great.

Local Area: The town of Black Mountain is very small but quite nice. It has two nice coffee shops several restaurants and some quaint little shops to visit. The town is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and provides the best views and scenery in the East. All of the local businesses appreciate the students support of the community and are very friendly and outgoing.

Transportation: I am not aware of any campus shuttle. The town of Black Mountain runs a shuttle into Montreat but I have never seen it on campus. Outside of Montreat there is public transportation that runs into Asheville which is nice if you have the time to take it.

Off-Campus Housing: When we were searching for places to live much of what was available was way out of my budget. The housing in the area seems to be fairly nice but is hard to get and to pricey. Being in the mountains limits the options and the parking for some of the locations. Most of the off campus housing is conveniently located within walking distance to the main campus. However, for more variety looking outside of Montreat and Black Mountain provides more options and better pricing.

Scholarships: The Financial Aid office was very helpful Knowledgeable and friendly. I was able to get all the assistance required and they did a wonderful job at communicating with me. The school offers many scholarship programs and does a wonderful job of relying that to its students.

Party Scene: I don't usually go out but there are a lot of places to go in Asheville which is about 20 minutes away.

3 College Junior

Campus Food: The dining options are somewhat limited to the dining hall and the Huckleberry Cafe, with that being said most of the food options are decent and balanced meals. occasionally the food options lack but overall the variety is not too bad.

4 College Junior

Athletics: For having such a small student body (450) the sports at this school play an important role at Montreat College. Almost 3/4 of students enrolled in the traditional program are involved in sports.

4 College Junior

Weather: So far it has been beautiful. Not too cold, and being in the mountains it doesn't get too hot.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: Close by everything closes at 11 but if you drive about 15 minutes there are tons of options

4 College Sophomore

Technology: Lots of computers available in the labs but wifi is somewhat undependable

5 College Sophomore

Parking: Very good parking. Plenty of room and very reasonably priced

3 College Sophomore

Campus Food: It is okay. Could be better. Closes at 7 which is very inconvenient.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: Dorms are currently about to be redone. Very tight community within the dorms yet very costly.

4 College Sophomore

Diversity: Most everyone is Christian but not everyone. There are some gay couples and some very liberal people but overall it is a conservative college.

3 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: A lot of serious couples and then a lot of high school type flirting.

Montreat isn't just an education—it's an experience. The classes are informative, taught by knowledgeable faculty who truly care about the welfare of the students. The staff is helpful, as well. Before school starts, maintenance and housekeeping work full time to prepare the buildings for the students. Administrative staff makes sure Montreat is as welcoming an environment as possible for students, organizing a plethora of activities, including dances and service opportunities for both orientation and the rest of the semester—all while working to make sure students are properly registered. The campus counselor and nurse personally talk to students and their parents about health concerns, including handicaps, allergies, sports injuries, and the best way to manage any health problems while at school. The campus police patrol Montreat to ensure its safety, and the RDs organize meetings early in the semester to go over safety policies; the police come and meet the students so that students know who to look for on campus.

The College’s personal interest in each student’s success is amazing on both an institutional and individual level. When a student misses a class, it is not uncommon for the professor to follow up and make sure the student is OK. The faculty carefully organizes class schedules and curricula to maximize benefits to the students, often asking the students what they want to get out of the class and then helping them achieve those goals, even if it means a deviation from the original schedule. Montreat’s active interest in both the current and future success of students is otherworldly. Superhuman efforts by the staff and faculty have brought about benefits such as in-class writing tutors, internships, and incredible student trips that give students the best that Montreat can offer.
