Party Scene

4 College Sophomore

Party Scene: There's not much going on downtown--it being rural Vermont--but Midd Rides provides good transportation and the on-campus parties are a great time.

5 College Sophomore

Party Scene: Totally depends on what you're looking for. I'm a member of the ultimate frisbee team, which is known for wild parties, but I'm sure they're not the Bacchanalian ragers you'd probably find at some state schools. If you're looking for that, you probably won't find it at Midd. But we certainly like to have a good time on the weekends, and you'll find parties Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (and sometimes Wednesday if you're on the frisbee team). We don't have frats, so most of the parties are through the sports teams. Personally, the intensity and frequency of Midd parties are pretty much perfect for me.

Party Scene: Nightlife is pretty much all on campus with the exception of a couple bars in town for the above 21 crowd. Parties on campus are pretty much hosted mostly by the male sports teams, but really anyone can get into them.

3 College Sophomore

Party Scene: You can can find parties every Saturday night going down in either Atwater or Palmer as well as a few other houses on campus. Friday nights can be a little more dead but still usually happening. Thursdays and Sundays can also be fun, depending on the week.

Party Scene: When it's good it's good. When it's happening.

What Middlebury lacks in downtown nightlife it nearly makes up for in on-campus entertainment, and that’s saying something, considering the town is totally dead after 10 p.m. There are three bars in town, and no clubs to speak of. Bars typically begin closing around midnight, and the nearest entertainment alternatives are a 50-minute drive north. The town is extremely conservative when it comes to noise-making and all types of partying. On the other hand, the College is sympathetic to a student’s need to forget all of the weekdays’ cares on the weekend. In light of this, the Middlebury College Activities Board (MCAB) and other student organizations often sponsor bands, parties, and famous entertainers on Fridays and Saturdays. There are always plays, instrumental concerts, dance performances, and other such events held in the Center for the Arts (CFA) and in other venues around campus, as well. As for the after-party, dorm room debauchery and drinking is rampant, and social houses hold raucous, yet often lame, beer blowouts nearly every weekend.

If you don’t plan on bringing a car to campus during your time at Middlebury, you may begin to feel extremely claustrophobic by sophomore year. The excitement of beer and grinding with sweaty strangers tends to wear off rather quickly, and everyone’s ready to explore a more varied social scene after a while. Drinking in a 4-by-4 room with your friends never loses its charm, but eventually you’ll probably be itching to get away to Burlington or Montreal one weekend.

Organization Parties
One of the most infamous college dance parties to hit the Middlebury campus is the "Sketchcullough" dance parties featuring mostly drunken underclassmen, sparkly tank tops, and trashy trance music. These are typically sponsored by different student groups on campus and are free. Men's sports teams-particularly the soccer, hockey, and lacrosse teams-host some of the rowdiest parties on campus, so freshman girls beware.
