Overall Experience: I still have a few years so haven't experienced it yet.

4 College Student

Overall Experience: Think its a good fit for me.

3 College Student

Campus Housing: Im a resident off campus.

4 College Student

Athletics: The could upgrade for sure, depending on the money situation. Older school so understandable.

4 College Student

Overall Experience: Just transferred from the University of Hawaii and very satisfied so far.

3 College Freshman

Overall Experience: The courses give a huge workload and it can be very stressful. The professors are sometimes not helpful during class so in history I didn't learn a thing. I pretty much had to teach my self

4 College Freshman

Campus Housing: I enjoy the housing besides the people on our floor. It's really nice and comforting here

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: I don't have any interest in joining one because the people seem snobbish

4 College Freshman

Athletics: I'm not a huge fan of athletics that I don't particularly like but everything here is nice and they seem respected

3 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I like being here but it's quite far from my family.

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: Whenever a crime or something happens I always get a text message about it. There are always police cars everywhere on campus.

4 College Freshman

Campus Housing: It's nice to stay on campus. You get to easily meet lots of new people. The dorms that are in the housing resident are really small but my dorm is a handicap room and it is bigger than most of the other dorms on my floor.

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: The Greek life is very involved in the community and at school. In fact, one of the Greeks group has gotten Stephem A. Smith from ESPN to come up to our school next Wednesday as a speaker for Black History Month.

4 College Freshman

Athletics: The athletic facilities look great. Many people show up to them on game days.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I like that it's very diverse. It's nice to meet people of many different types of races on campus.

Academics: Study areas outside the library, where they exist, are noisy open spaces. MTSU also has a "look busy" culture. Being seen studying is more important than actual studying. The preferred study style is group study, and the cultural narrative at MTSU is that group study works best for everyone, even if it actually results in poorer grades.

Diversity: MTSU does have a very diverse student body in terms of ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds; religious backgrounds; sexual orientations; political beliefs; and economic backgrounds. However, there is virtually no tolerance for deviation from the heteronormative, neurotypical, WASPy norm.

2 College Senior

Overall Experience: Online course selection is dismal. That wouldn't be a problem, except that there is only ever one section of any class above freshman-level courses, and they are all scheduled in the same time slots, so forget about working then around an office job. The college spends a ton of money renovating and putting in fancy touch screens, but refuses to hire more teaching staff. I don't know anyone who managed to actually graduate with a bachelor's degree in four years. I know many undergrads who have been at MTSU for eight years or more.

Health & Safety: The campus lacks any kind of outdoor security cameras. Rapes and robberies are reported weekly. The student body's attitude toward sexual assault victims can be summed up as, "Stop talking about it, liar. It was probably your fault."

Overall Experience: One word: Don't.

MTSU has several systemic cultural problems. I have yet to meet a staff member who will not cheerfully pretend it doesn't. No one, except members of the student body, will acknowledge that this place need change worse than last week's socks.

Before I started at MTSU, I often heard it referred to as "the 13th grade." I would place it more in the area of the 7th-and-a-halfth grade. Cliques abound and gossip is plentiful. Diversity is tolerated only on paper, and the kind you wipe your you-know-what with at that. At MTSU, there is One Correct Way to Be, and One True Way to Learn. Anything else is wrong, invalid, and must be shunned, erased, driven out. As the saying goes, "The nail that sticks out must be driven down."

Further, although this is not a religious institution, Christian culture permeates everything. Religious debate arises in every class discussion I've ever been part of. Certain instructors have no problems with the teaching of outright lies. Volunteer opportunities? Hope you like church groups. Bible quotes even adorn the walls of the so-called Science Building.

Care to report a problem? Rape, robbery, vandalism, discrimination, ADA non-compliance? LOL, just kidding. MTSU has no problems. You must be mistaken.

Even the course evaluation surveys given at the end of every semester are biased, weighted such that all positive responses are on one side of the form.

Run. Run fast, far away, and in literally any other direction.

But, if you insist on going to MTSU, do yourself a favor and only take professors who don't have tenure yet.

Greek Life: I'm not in Greek life but the girls I know that are seem pretty nice and easy going.

4 College Freshman

Athletics: I don't really participate in sporting events so I'm not sure how to review them. The rec center is really nice, though.

Overall Experience: Its a pretty good school. Nice faculty, convenient food set up, but the Chemistry department is horrible.

Not everyone is keen on the town of Murfreesboro, but almost everyone loves MTSU—it's a safe and rewarding environment. One key to a stress-free experience here is to plan ahead so you're not running late for class all the time. Stress can be tough, and a few stitches in time can help you avoid a lot of headaches. Once students graduate, many seem to leave with a bigger impression of the people who helped them learn, rather than the actual material they studied. Lots of students also comment that they have made great friends at MTSU and are grateful for the experience and opportunities. There is something for everyone in Murfreesboro, and if you make an effort to look around the corner, you may find the solution to a problem you didn't even know you had. The outdoor environment around MTSU is personally rewarding. There are local parks everywhere and major state parks as close as a 30-minute drive in any direction. Anyone who chooses to become active in outdoor pursuits will not be let down. Between the inspiring Tennessee landscape and the technical and logistical assistance from MTSU, an outdoor enthusiast can enjoy wonderful experiences here.

Remember: If you ever need help while you're here, all you have to do is ask. The faculty and staff at MTSU want nothing more than to see you succeed. Your success reflects upon them and enforces their purpose in teaching. Your teachers can also be your best networking tool when it comes time to look for a job or internship, so when you find professors you like, take other classes with them, and really get to know them—you can go far.
