3 College Freshman

Administration: I haven't had any experience with the campus disciplinary system, however from what I've heard, it is fairly lenient and we have an amnesty system.

3 College Freshman

Scholarships: It seemed pretty straightforward, and I feel as though Miami is considerably generous regarding scholarships.

Party Scene: Miami University could be described as a 'party school', that being said, parties are easily accessible through the greek organizations, and several clubs in uptown Oxford allow 18+ year olds to enter, and have been known to turn a blind eye to underage drinking.

Majors: My program was fairly easy to be admitted into, all I did was declare my major. There weren't really any difficulties, I thought that the administrative staff was very helpful and easy to communicate with. My advice for admission is to be honest for yourself when deciding what you want to study, there's nothing worse than being compelled to do something you don't enjoy.

3 College Freshman

Athletics: I haven't had much experience attending sporting events at Miami University, but I have a lot of friends that are highly committed to their club and intramural teams. In my opinion, our varsity sports are underrated.

4 College Sophomore

Administration: For the most part, they are just the right amount of strict. They care when necessary and help when need be.

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: I luckily have not heard of a story of sexual harassment on campus. Being a small college town, I feel relatively safe most of the time. Walking around at night by myself however I always am very cautious.

5 College Sophomore

Academics: As many people say, Miami is the public ivy of Ohio! Professors really care about your learning experience.

Academics: So far, as I lean towards majoring in history, I have loved every course I have taken about history! As I said before, professors are absolutely wonderful!

Campus Food: Miami dining is like any school dining. You can find some healthy options but most aren't exactly the healthiest.

4 College Sophomore

Majors: There are plenty of options and you can find something that you have interest in easily.

3 College Sophomore

Majors: I personally have not declared a specific major but all of the majors I have thought about and taken courses for have been a blast!

3 College Sophomore

Diversity: You can always find international students on campus. In fact, there are some halls dedicated to international students alone.

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: I am personally not apart of Greek life, but my best friend is and she absolutely loves it. She is always talking about the great things they do for the community and Ronald McDonald House.

4 College Sophomore

Local Area: Uptown a Miami is a fun place to be during the day. The park there is always inviting and there are so many local food places worth trying.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: I lived on campus as a freshman and and will again as a sophomore. Although I'm not a fan of the community bathrooms, everything is always cleaned and attended to.

3 College Sophomore

Athletics: Our hockey team is one of the best in the country! We always have a big crowd to support the hockey team no matter who we play. However, other popular sports like football are not as popular. For example, we did not win one football game last year.

5 College Sophomore

Party Scene: Miami's party scene is a huge part of the student experience. It is not uncommon for students to go out more than 3 times a week, although most students put school work first. The biggest bars are all 18+, with a cover charge for underage customers. Bars hit capacity constantly when the weather is nice. Beat the Clock and Broken Clock, two daytime happy hour events on Friday & Saturday, are very popular with students. Day Drinking is huge at Miami, either at bars or at house parties. House parties tend to be hosted by Fraternities, and because of this it is almost impossible for non-greek male students to attend after Rush second semester Freshman year. Non-Greek hosted house parties are extremely rare.

Overall Experience: Lots of Survey classes are huge, but most other classes have about 20-30 people, sometimes less. Professors are great, although TAs are often a hassle. There are lots of courses offered, and a wide variety.

4 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: Miami's alumni network is extremely devoted. It is not uncommon for people to find jobs through Miami alum, and alum visit the campus often.

3 College Sophomore

Local Area: Students LOVE Oxford, but it is without a doubt a very small town. You cannot expect museums or cultural attractions in a town that is based solely around a college.Walking is the most common transportation. Shopping is surprisingly good for such a small town, there are quite a few boutiques, although they are all expensive.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: For such a small town, Oxford has lots of great off-campus dining options. However, it cannot compete with more urban schools. There are quite a few fast food options, but they almost all require a car to get to. The more walkable options are immediately uptown, and they tend to be sit down restaurants. Eating off campus is common, but it can get expensive.

4 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Miami is definitely a school full of preppier people, but it is not as bad as the stereotype suggests. People do dress up for class more than at other schools, but it's not as if people wear business casual attire constantly. The students are known for being attractive, and that is generally true- everyone is well groomed, and people care about their appearance. As far as Social Life, people are genuinely friendly, and eager to make friends. Many people meet their best friends in their freshman dorms, but you can also meet people through clubs, class, or mutual friends.

Campus Quality: The university quite literally has the most beautiful campus. Everyone talks about it and it is one of the selling points.

5 College Sophomore

Academics: Another reason I chose this school, is for its academics. It is very prestigious and rigorous course work.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

There’s an old saying that goes, “You can make a big school small, but you can’t make a small school big.” The overall experience at Miami University is different for every student, but most seem to have enjoyed their time here, and most will agree that the former part of this statement is representative of Miami. Miami is not a huge school, but it is large enough to feel like a big university without being overwhelming. It is essential to find a niche when you arrive; otherwise, you may get lost in the shuffle. One of the best ways to determine if you will like Miami is to take into consideration what is important to you in a school and to really weigh your options. Visit the campus and ask questions—this is the next four or five years of your life. If Miami does not fulfill an important need you have, it probably isn’t the school for you, and there are people here who feel like they don’t belong.

Nobody enjoys school 100 percent of the time, but the students at Miami have a plethora of options, both social and academic, at their doorsteps. At Miami, you cannot be afraid to try new things, talk to new people, or grow as an individual. However, this is true no matter where you decide to attend college. Overall, the most important fact to take away from this guide is that most students feel that they made the right decision in attending Miami.
