Health & Safety

5 College Freshman

Health & Safety: I feel safe on campus even at night. There are many securities around the place.

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: We have a nurse practitioner on campus during normal business hours during the week. Otherwise, you have to go to one of the urgent cares/emergency rooms off-campus. Our safety is great with tons of "blue lights" around campus. We are pretty secluded in general, so the chances of someone coming on campus randomly is rare.

Health & Safety: The Engle Center here is great. They have nurses, nurse practitioners and physical therapists along with lots of other health and counseling resources. I also feel very safe here. I am fine walking alone at night and don't worry about whether or not I may be attacked.

The entire Grantham campus scores high on safety. Students report feeling safe when walking around campus, even at the latest of hours. The campus is located in a suburban area surrounded by cornfields and is isolated from roads, neighborhoods, and shopping centers. The worst crimes reported recently were multiple dorm break-ins and room thefts occurring overnight. This is why public safety stresses the importance of locking room doors at night. A recent reported incident of sexual assault by a ski-masked stranger had the campus in a craze, but it was later discovered that this crime had been falsely reported by the alleged victim. She was charged with filing a false report. Overall, campus police officers are friendly and easily accessible via phone, emergency call boxes, and dispatch services on the first floor of Eisenhower.

When it comes to students’ physical and emotional health needs, the Engle Center for Counseling and Health Services is incredibly convenient. It is located in the center of campus across from the Jordan Science Center and between Eisenhower and the union. Walk-ins are always welcome for sick students, and the wait is usually minimal. Students in a hurry are encouraged to take advantage of the self-care room that offers the opportunity to diagnose and treat simple respiratory infections. Professional and caring counselors are available for support by appointment. This service is free of charge.
