Campus Quality

Campus Quality: Student life involve many things. What I love about Mercer is that everybody is family regardless of your beliefs, orientation, and ethnicity. I have never seen a college campus flooded with international students from the East. It is a wonderful site. The theology students host a weekly fellowship with students from other countries to get them involve in networking, crossing other barriers that they may have faced in their own country, and help them build on their English language. The are always seminars from each school, volunteer drives, giveaways, movies, lunch and learn incentives, free food initiatives from community leaders, volleyball, basketball, tennis, and a host events with the youth and high school students sporting activities. Mercer is also a strong community supporter and server. Many of us also join together on major sporting events to enjoy some form of leisure at local pub bars or restaurants. After a certain hour campus gets very quite. Not everyone parties or mess around because they are focus on the next goal and agenda. Many of the hangout spots are located on Lavista and Blaircliff roads. There are plenty of other services like suicide prevention, counseling, career events and webpage, and many trips to other countries.

The facilities on Mercer’s campus are generally very well-maintained. Some buildings are a bit dated, but they balance out nicely with the newer areas of campus, such as the popular University Center (UC), a multipurpose building with a gym, food court, swimming pool, basketball courts, and an arena. The Academic Resource Center (ARC) offers two computer labs and tutoring. The three-story Jack Tarver Library generally has long hours and 24-hour study rooms, in addition to private study rooms. There are many areas on campus where studying either alone or in groups can take place, including the lounges inside residence halls and the lounge on the second floor of the Connell Student Center (CSC). Mercer does a fairly good job of updating and renovating its spaces to meet the needs of students and faculty.

Mercer has a very compact and pedestrian-friendly campus, and its grounds are pristine. Maintenance of the grounds is evident year-round. Not only is the campus pleasing to the eye, but portions of it are frequently used by students. The quad and Porter Patch are ideal for outdoor studying, events, or games of Frisbee or football.

"Green" Initiatives
There have been attempts at establishing a consistent, campus-wide recycling program at Mercer, but it does not seem to have had a lasting effect. Currently, there is an emphasis on saving water in the cafeteria. Mercer could probably improve its green initiatives.
School Slang
  • The Caf or FFC: Fresh Food Company, the school cafeteria
  • GDIs: Fraternity lingo for non-Greek students
  • The UC: University Center
Running Up the Hill: On Girls and Boys Bid Day, Greek pledges participate in an event where they literally run up the hill in front of the UC before joining their respective fraternities and sororities.
Urban Legends
  • Another story that circulates Mercer now and then is of a ghost that resides in the Back Door Theatre and periodically causes strange noises and unexplained movement of props and other items.
  • The most popular-and false-legend frequently told to freshmen is of a girl who supposedly committed suicide on the now-closed top floor of Mary Ellen Porter Hall when she was denied acceptance into a sorority.
Favorite Things To Do
Campus events are always popular with the student body. Quadworks, various student organizations, and Greek life host many open-invitation events for everyone to enjoy. In the warm months, a trip to Plunkett Pool is always a possibility. It's also common to see games of football and Frisbee being played on Porter Patch during nice weather.

Clubs and Organizations on Campus
Greek organizations are very visible on campus. The Student Government Association and Quadworks are other popular organizations for students to get involved in, while interest-based clubs are less popular. All student organizations are required to renew once a year with Campus Life. New students who want to get a feel for the clubs and organizations at Mercer should attend the annual Bear Fair at the start of each school year.
